Review for Yezdi Roadking

I own three Yezdis. One a D250 Classic, a Roadking and I recently acquired a 350 TWIN (Jawa Engine). I'll get straight to the point and thats about the Roadking.

This bike is powered by an Air Cooled 246 cc single cylinder engine and its electricals are based on a 12 volt CDI ignition system. My bike is a year 94 model. Roadkings used to be on Points Alternator system during the time it was introduced. There is no unique feature for this bike I can talk about. What it does give you are the basics you need on any bike ot two wheeler. Good comfortable riding position, Loads of grip (You can sleep into your corners and the bike won't lose its hold), adequate amount of power, torque and an attitude of a different kind.

The gearbox has something unique about it. It can be adjusted to work in a way that you will never need to use the clutch in any which way you shift other than to start from first gear. The bike can be ridden under control even if your clutch cable snaps but this technique needs to be learnt. There are neutrals between each and every gear. You can use them whenever you feel like but under normal riding conditions you don't have to go through each and every neutral thats in between each cog or gear; it all feels synchromesh.

This is not a bike for the mileage minded. All you will get from this bike and thats if its well tuned is 35 kmpl; and you achieve this figure only if you ride with mild throttle control. Under high speeds (100 Kmph) expect around 27 kmpl. The engine is very sensitive on this bike considering the gas it guzzles. Ride the bike properly and you can achieve probably a fuel economy figure of over 35. If your really pissed with the RX or Pulsar dude next to you; you can get him to eat your dust but at the cost of fuel economy which can go all the way down to 22 Kmpl under death trap riding conditions. The Top speed for this bike is 120 kmph but it is very easy to tune the bike and hit mad speeds of 140+ Kmph but at this speed the bike does not feel planted on the road.

The electricals can put you off mood from time to time and thats if you use sub standard bulb brands; which is what comes as standard fitment if you were to have bought the bike brand new when Ideal Jawa Motors were alive. Rev high and your bulbs fuse. Use a Mico or Philips Halogen bulb and tail lamp bulb and all will work fine without any blow outs. Beam quality is excellent for the headlamp and the tail light is bright enough to provide sufficient warning of your bike present on the streets or the highway. The bike comes with indicators. You might need to change the horn on the bike cause its not loud enough.

The bike can cruise all day long but the seating position tends to get you to crouch which is not so good for your back. You won't realise this while riding the bike and since you will be enjoying the ride this will be the last thing you might ever take notice to correct yourself.

Fuel tank capacity is 16 litres including reserve.

There is small storage space available but all it can hold is just your tool kit and bike documents.

The trouble with owning any Yezdi is that you need a reliable and honest mechanic. Not that the bike gives you any trouble. Its just that since the manufacturer no longer exists there is no place to take your bike in for service other than private run workshops. I am lucky to have a very good mechanic and in 3 years of using my Yezdis I have never had a breakdown; even on long distances rides. Spare Parts are cheap and easily available but only if you live in Bangalore or in any other part of Karnataka State. I can't comment on other cities.

If you would like to go for a very long ride get the bike checked up and carry some basic spares with you such as Bulbs, Throttle cable, Clutch cable, Rear Brake cable (Some Yezdis have a steel rod installed instead of the original design which is a cable operated rear brake) and a Tyre Tube. Nothing really breaks down on the bike cause its mechanicals are so simple. Original Design Throttle, Brake and Clutch cables tend to snap every two months or sooner but there are superior thicker quality cables available that last for well over a year. Get these fixed.

This bike is solid and can take a hard hiting on any terrain you take it. Things may start to rattle and shake but your mechanicals will never give up on you.

Gauges are just a Speedometer and Odometer. Pillion comfort can be an issue. This is more a riders bike.

Roadkings are known for their loud two stroke muffler noise but thats not the original sound. The bike is actually a very silent runner and this excess noise comes only if you remove two small tubes placed inside the silencer. You can easily grab attention with all the noise you make but the norm today seems to be clean and clear sounding bikes. Its not just that; a Roadking is such a beautiful bike to ride with the mufflers intact in their silencer systems.

This bike truly stand out for its reliability, longevity and truly fits the company's line ''Forever Bike, Forever Value''. Once you ride a Yezdi there is no way you will give up your bike.
