I went to Salem city recently for my friends marriage. There we planned to make a trip to yercaud. This cluster of 67 villages on the Shervarayan hillside is situated in the Salem District of Tamil Nadu and is about an hour's drive (35 km) from Salem City. And yet, to term Yercaud 'the poor man's Ooty' seems like an unfair appellation because the charms of this quiet hill station.
It deserves to be experienced and judged on their own terms. Since the secret is not to expect too much, you will be pleasantly surprised, enchanted by the serenity and lush green vegetation. Ofcourse there is two bonus things - the fact that temperatures are cool through out the year and it will completely suit your budget - since it is least expensive hill station in India.
I will give a list of places which you must see in Yercaud. First the important tourist attraction is the Natural Lake. The serene atmosphere is sometimes killed by the sound of motor boats and the glaring music from the plantation labourers theatre nearby. But you can enjoy boating here, very cheap around Rs40 for 1/2hr in a two -seat pedaller. There is Anna park and Bear's cave which is situated on the way to the Shervarayan temple.
The hotel rates are cheaper here, or you can stay in salem -visit yercaud - go back in the evening. There are lot of trains and buses from Chennai to Salem, if anybody is coming from Bombay you can catch Kanyakumari express and can get down in Salem station.
I am guaranting you an exhillerating experience - perhaps a mystical one.
