Forget about McDonald's and forget about Burger King if you're looking for a fast burger that's not half bad. Wendy's serves up burgers hot and fresh enough for my liking, and I don't even mind that buckets of grease that come with a burger from Wendy's.

My favorite there is the triple. Ah, yeah! You get three whole patties of greasy, messy beef stuck on a bun that can barely contain it. Add some cheese and mustard to that mess, and you're own your way to fast food heaven. Hell, I know Wendy's isn't exactly good for me, but there are few things that can satisfy a craving for tasty beef quicker than a burger from Wendy's.

Wendy's is a completely different type of spot from McDonald's and Burger King, see. McDonald's stuff is just barely fit for human consumption, while Burger King is okay because of the flame broiling and all. However, Wendy's uses beef that tastes fresh enough and serves it up the way you want it. Get a single, double or triple burger with cheese or without. Get one with bacon, if you want, too.

Also, there are a lot of specialty sandwiches there that actually border on healthy. You've got some pretty good chicken sandwiches available in many styles. Also, you might be in the mood for chicken and caeser salad wrapped in a pita. They've got that, too, as well as salads, chili and etc.

The fries, too, are good enough for me. While they're not quite as thin and crispy at fries from Burger King, they're nice and robust, and salted just right when you get them.

The only thing I don't like about Wendy's is that you can't get a shake. Instead, you can opt for a Frostie. That is, simply, some fairly thick chocolate ice cream in a cup. It's not exactly a drink as you have to eat it with a spoon, but it's not bad, either.

As for portions, Wendy's doesn't cheat you on those. Not very hungry? Try one of those 99 cent burgers. If you're starving, go for the triple or get a huge chicken sandwich. Toss in a salad too, if you want. Wendy's, see, has something for every appetite.

The service, too, is lightening quick. While I prefer to get something at the drive-through and eat it while driving across town (might be a bit dangerous as I have a standard transmission), the service is quite fast when you're inside the place, too. The folks at Wendy's seem to have grasped the idea of ''fast food'' in that they try to get it to you quickly.

Now, there are times when it doesn't work out that way, of course. At the drive through, the place sometimes gets bogged down in orders. That happens only rarely, fortunately.

So, for a fast food restaurant that's just a cut above what you expect, try Wendy's. The food is tasty, fresh enough for the price and it's served to you hot and fast. These are all good things. Now Wendy's might cost a bit more than McDonald's, but you can feed a family of four for around $15 (complete with kids meals that contain cheap toys). That's not too bad.
