I had no expectations from this movie and I should say that the movie for me is surprisingly good. I was a little disappointed after coming out of the theatre because of certain portions in the second half but overall I was happy and satisfied!

The story of the movie: Prem (Shahid Kapoor) is a handsome, eligible bachelor and son of a rich businessman Harishchandra (Anupam Kher). Prem gets a proposal for marriage from a simple family in Madhupur. The girl is Poonam (Amrita Rao). At first, Prem is reluctant but later agrees when his father persuades him. When Prem and Poonam meet, they fall in love in first sight. Slowly, they discover each other and their love grows. They get engaged and their marriage was scheduled to take place in 6 months. It is said that the period between marriage and engagement is the most beautiful, most romantic period for the soul mates. In this time period, Prem and Poonam enjoy and could not wait for these six months to get over. Six months fly by. It was time for the marriage for Prem and Poonam. Just when everything was fine, one incident changes everybody’s life.

Vivah scores mainly in the first half. The first half is beautiful. There are no dull moments in this half and it is quite enjoyable, quite romantic and quite touching. The second half too is not so bad. The first part of the second half is too good and brings a smile on our face. But the problem is with the last 45 minutes of the movie. In this 45 minute there is a big twist as all problems arise. This twist was totally unpredictable no doubt but in my opinion it was not needed. The director should have kept no sad moments in the entire movie. Though the movie would look strange after that, but whats the problem in that? Is it not possible?

Another reason why Vivah scores is that it is a complete family movie and such type of movie have not released of late.

Vivah has some beautiful moments, which would remain etched in the viewer’s memory. The beginning scene, where Alok Nath says that ‘how come some people can be so cruel to their daughters’ is too good. This dialogue is likeable because it is original and very true. The other scene, which needs special mention, is the scene when Shahid and Amrita meet for the first time and speak together. Shahid speaks up his entire life story in front of Amrita. It showed how Shahid didn’t wanted to hide anything from Amrita. In my opinion, this was the sweetest scene of the movie!

Shahid Kapoor is the winner this time! With each movie, he is getting better and with Vivah he has totally grown as an actor. In the entire movie, he does not disappoint even for a moment. Well done, Shahid!

Amrita Rao is next to Shahid here. She gets into the skin of her character and performs brilliantly this time. Really she is an actor to watch. After Main Hoon Naa, this was her next best performace!

Alok Nath as Krishna Kant again gets to play the role of a good old man. This role was not hard to play for Alok Nath as he had done similar roles many times before! But though, he has done a good. But I would like to see him in a negative role, at least once!

Seema Biswas as Rama (Amrita’s chachi) was okay but she was very different from what she has done before. Anupam Kher was nice. Amrita Prakash as Choti does a good job and looks very confident on screen. Samir Soni rocks this time! He does a great job and he has all the qualities necessary for being a successful actor! Lata Saberwal as Bhavna does a good job. Manoj Joshi (as Bhagatji), Dinesh Lamba (as Munimji) and Amey Pandya (as Rahul-Samir Soni’s son) were funny. Mohnish Behl in a special apperance does a fine job.

Sanjay Dhabade does a brilliant job as an art director. He has created the entire village of Madhupur in the film studio. Suprisingly, the viewer does not even come to know about it as he has does his job perfect and taken attention even to the minute details. For instance, he has shown tangled cable wires, spit-marks on walls etc to create a village-type of atmosphere! Excellent, isn’t it?

Aash Karan Atal’s dialogues are very touching and quite emotional. Ravindra Jain’s music in Vivah reminds you of the music of Hum Aapke Hai Koun. But though it is nice. Songs, which were really nice, are ‘Mujhe Haq Hai’, ‘Do Anjaane Ajnabi’, ‘Hamari Shaadi Mein’ and ‘Tere Dwaare Pe Aayi Baarat’.

Sooraj Barjatya’s direction is good. He has done a extremely fine job as a director.

Some of the nice scenes of the movie:

  1. The beginning flashback scene

  2. The scene where Shahid and Amrita meet for the first time

  3. The scene where Shahid and Amrita’s family spend time at far-off village, Som Sarovar

  4. The scene where Shahid explains his two meetings to Amrita on phone

  5. The song ‘Hamari Shaadi Mein’

On the whole, Vivah is excellent and it scores because of performances, some excellent scenes and the first half. The twist in the second half was not needed and it made the movie length longer. But overall, the movie is too good and should be watched at least once. It is a movie, which is simple, nice and can be enjoyed by the whole family together. Its business would be very nice in the first two weeks. But after the release of Dhoom2 on November 24, its collections may fall down.
