After the trailers of the Hindi remake of Vikram-Vedha started doing the rounds, a lot of film buffs who somehow had missed the original 2017 Tamil thriller are watching it on OTT. I also watched it-though couldn't find a great Tamil print with English subtitles, so had to watch the slightly edited dubbed Hindi version online. Vikram-Vedha is an amazing adaptation of the mythological Vikram-Betaal saga by the husband-wife team of Pushkar-Gayathri. The film is set in the police vs criminals of Tamil Nadu and a lot of action happens in Chennai. The film stars Madhavan as inspector Vikram and Vijay Setupathi as the criminal Vedha. The film has a riveting screenplay and a great story with superb twists and turns. The restrained performance of Madhavan is complemented so well by a massy portrayal of Vijay and both are simply superb. The direction by the duo is so amazing that even in a commercial noir thriller, you need to keep your brain and eyes open. technically the film is excellent too. The cinematography and action are great but the haunting background score takes the cake. All in all one of the best crime thrillers made in India and also an excellent adaptation of an ancient tale. Now let us see if the Hindi remake comes close to this gem!
