India just celebrated 75 years of its independence. It is also 75 years of the partition and birth of Pakistan, that the subcontinent saw whose impact still looms large on us. Gurinder Chadha's Partition 1947, also titled Viceroy's House(released in 2017) on Netflix is a gritty tale of the saga with fictional elements poured in. The film is closely based on the novel Freedom at Midnight by Larry Collins and also elements inspired by Gurinder's own grandmother's life. The film is set in British India with the arrival of Lord Mountbatten and Edwina and the political turmoil of that era. The film depicts the religious differences and riots happening in the country. It also shows that in spite of all leaders including Britishers trying to avoid partition, it became inevitable. The film is a grand international saga set in an important part of history and has good performances from the overseas and Indian cast. The director is successful in showing the horrors of the tragedy and also sets a love story in it. As per many critics, the film takes a simplistic view of the complex problem and also undermines the horror. However, as a viewer, I felt she is able to put soul into the subject and also makes it an interesting watch!
