When I read milinddesai's review on VSNL ISP then felt the need of writing (or should I say updating?) his information, which was really old, written months ago. Now things have changed with time and VSNL has gone older and slower.
I have never used VSNL before but heard a lot about its speed and of course free service. And at last, in this year I have decided to test this service and bought an account (VSNL TATA Indicom Total Internet). The main purpose was multiplayer gaming via Internet and downloading software. But when I connected my computer to the net at 12 O'clock (at night, just to avoid high telephone bills - I am sure you can understand), it really made me sick. The speed was under 1kbps! Even a lot of times it failed to download yahoo messenger, which, required online setup. Then I decided to do something else, by connecting my computer to game server.
Till then I used to play at high detail game settings with account free net service (Provided by BSNL in Calcutta). With VSNL, the game did not run untill the settings are pulled down to a lower level. This situation continued for days, but the last week probably was waiting to give me a surprise! Downloading speed was 2.3kbps! Although this speed cannot be considered high, but was enough to astonish me. Actually that was the result of addition of an extra 1gb bandwidth to the service.
The last thing is about surfing, which I think is average and this connection better suits to people who do not want to download but only surf web pages.
