*'Music has a natural place in our lives. Right from the shloka you recite in your morning puja and the milkman who comes whistling on his cycle, to the fakir singing as he begs for alms and your mother humming around the kitchen.Music fills our spaces naturally. It will always be dear to us.' - Gulzar [poet, lyricist, writer, director]

Rahul Dev Burman, popularly known as Panchamda** [I read somewher he was nicknamed so coz as a child, he would cry in all the five notes!], was the man who introduced the most happening rock n'roll music to the hindi film music scene. Panchamda is one of those rare composers who has scored all type of music: from heartrending soulful tunes to fun songs, his music made waves  right from 1960s to late 1990s & is even popular today. There are so many of his songs which I like & very few which I don't, its really tough to choose just a few songs, so instead of naming his 20 twenty songs, I've selected his 20 films where each of his songs is highlighted, this way I wont be facing the dilemma of selecting just one song from a movie

Bhoot Bangla: Aao Twist Karein would be one of the earlier compositions by Panchamda & his different style of music is so obvious in this song, where he also acted alongside Mehmood, besides acting & dancing to some other comic songs.

Padosan: Mere saamne wali khidki mein is my favourite track from this hilarious movie. Yes, this liking has much to do with the funny situation of the song but also the music where we hear the'sounds' for barsaat or baadal. This song is sung by Kishore Kumar [who also starred in the film] in his usual comic flair. The other song is the riotous side-splitting: Ek chatur naar karake singhaar I love the'arre dham, o dham ruk.lama lama bal bal bal re' Kishore Kumar sings! It makes me laugh like crazy. There is one song:Merii pyaari bindu, meri bindu re bindu damn cute song which Kishore sings when Sunil asks his Guru(Kishore) to help him sing something for his sweetheart Bindu(Saira Banu).

Kati Patang:Jis gali mein tera ghar na ho baalma is the superb song. The film has other equally good songs: Yeh Shaam Mastani, Pyar deewana hota hai & Yeh jo mohabbat hai each of these were beautified by the voice of Kishore Kumar [sigh!]

Teesri Manzil: Can anyone forget the jazzy compositions in this film? songs like * O Haseena Zulfon Waali, Aaja Aaja Main Hoon Pyaar Tera [a breathy seduction song] * which has the audience tapping their foot and the other songs O Mere Sona Re Sona Re, Deewaana mujhsa nahin were unlike any of the other film songs in that time & even today the music of Teesri Manzil is as popular as before.

Amar Prem The song Raina beeti jaaye is a classical gem, beautifully rendered by Lata Mangeshkar & picturised on the dimpled Sharmila Tagore.

Hare Rama Hare Krishna: The Pancham-Asha combo rock song:Dum maaro dum mitt jaaye gham! was a phenomenal success where we see Zeenat Amaan swaying to the beat of Panchamda's music & Ashaji singing: Duniya ne humko diya kya? hum sabki parwa kare kyu? sabne hamara kiya kya? I love the way Ashaji sings: aaaaaa dum maaro dum:)

Caravan: Monica was never a famous named before Panchamda yelled out Monica O' My Darling! When talking of the best dance songs no one can forget to mention the sexy Piya tu ab to aajaa where Helen gyrates to the hip & energetic beats of Panchamda.

Apna Desh: Here Panchamda sings Duniya mein logon ko dhoka kabhi ho jaata hain in a unique grunting sound, he is accompanied by his all time favourite singer Asha Bhonsle, the fun in this song is the uh uh uh [whatever it is, we all know what sound I mean], which I think was never done in any song before this one, truly different.

Jawani Deewani:My fav ’’madcap’’ song Jaane jaa dhundta phir raha - in true R D Burman style, this song has a very catchy beat & the way Asha Bhosle sang it in a different pitch is simply superb.

Yaadon ki Baraat:I dislike the title song but totally freak out on the other song Aapke kamare mein koyi rehta hain * its a true Wowie! The other cool foot tapping songs are *Dil mil gayi toh hum khil gaye, Lekar hum deewana dil firte hain & of course -Chura liya hai tumne jo dil ko [remember a pouty Zeenat making music by hitting a spoon on the glass?].

Khel Khel Mein: had really cool teeny boppy songs which are hummable even today. Ek main aur ek tu & Humne tumko dekha are my favourite.

Hum Kissi se Kum Nahin: Can anyone miss the melodious *Aa dil kya, Mehefil hai tere kadmo mein, Mil gaya hum ko saathi & Chaand mera dil My all time fav is: Kya hua tera vaada? Woh kasam.* Must mention that this song was sung by my fav Rafisaab:)

Love Story, Rocky, Betaab: the lovey dovey & hep songs Dekho maine dekha hain yeh ek sapna, Aa dekhe jara, Jab hum jawa honge was a total craze among all teenagers.

*Panchamda teamed up with writer - director Gulzar to give some reminiscent masterpieces:

Parichay:The heartbreaking song which I love is *Beeti na beetayi raina, birha ki jaayi raina, there is a special moment in this song where Bhupendra halts & then the song is continued by Lataji, given the song's situation in the film this'continuation' remains in the mind of viewer/listener.

Aandhi: This film had the best of everything! Right from the story, star cast, director or singers everyone made Aandhi & its songs, unforgettable ones. Almost all the songs in this film are beautiful Is mod se jaate hain, Teri bina zindagi se koyi shikawa, Tum Aagaye Ho Noor Aagaya Hai all sung by Kishoreji & Lataji

Khusboo, Kinara: Both films had good music but the songs that stand out are:*O Manjhi Re & Naam Gum Jayega *, these two songs performed by Kishoreji & Lataji, need no introduction at all.

Ijaazat: This film where Panchamda teamed with Gulzar [director & lyricist] has some brilliant music & the songs can be easily called masterpieces - Choti si Kahani Hai, Khaali Haath Shyam Aayi Hai, Katra Katra and My favourite song in this film is Mera kuch samaan tumhare pass pada hainwhich won Asha Bhonsle the National Award.

  • In each of the above mentioned song one can find the spark of S.D Burman's poignant music, which Panchamda had inherited & would've made his father proud of these beautiful compositions

.Uff! MS limits:(
