My attempt at ''sooraj ko chirag dikhaana''

Since I'm writing after a really really long time, I wanted to write on a topic I feel very strongly and passionately about.

Most of my family, friends, relatives and some of my MS friends are aware of my fanaticism regarding Lata Mangeshkar.I literally worship the lady.I can't even begin to tell you how many arguments and disagreements I've landed in whenever I' ve heard anybody talking about Lataji in a disrespectful manner. As another MS friend Preran said-her voice is like my mother's voice to me-never fails to soothe me.

It does not matter to me if in the recent years she doesn't sound like she did 20-30-40 years ago.For me it is enough that I share my time on earth with this legend called** LATA MANGESHKAR.

There are hundreds of Lataji's songs I just love but the ones I'm about to mention here are very very dear to me.I love her duets but in my list I've selected only her solos.I've selected songs that come to my mind immediately whenever I think of the'kudrat ka karishma' called Lata Mangeshkar.

So, here is my attempt at'sooraj ko chiraag dikhaana'-quite literally so.

1.Chhod de saari duniya kisi ke liye, yeh munasib nahi aadmi ke liye,

pyaar se bhi zaroori kayee kaam hain, pyaar sab kuch nahi zindagi ke liye.(Saraswati Chandra).

This song just might be my most favorite Lata Mangeshkar song.Absolutely wonderful lyrics and music and divine rendition by the lady. This song transports me to a different world altogether.

2.Aaja piya, tohe pyaar doon, gori baiyyan to' pe vaar doon,

kis liye tu itna udaas, sookhe sookhe honth, ankhiyon mein pyaas, kis liye, kis liye.(Baharon Ke Sapney).

Wow, what a song -is my reaction every time I hear this one.

3.Tum na jaane kis jahaan mein kho gaye,

hum bhari duniya mein tanha ho gaye.(Sazaa).

I fell in love with this song when I was in Std. 3 and my music teacher played it on her tape recorder for the whole class.Anyone who has heard this song will agree that Lataji emotes through her voice. This is one of her earlier songs, so you can still make out the slight nasal twang she had in that part of her career.

4.Piya tose naina laagey re, naina laagey re,

jaane kya ho ab aagey re, naina laagey re.(Guide).

I don't have words that can describe the brilliance of this song. Not at all an easy song to sing but just see how effortlessly Lataji carries this classical-based song.

5.Chalte chalte yun hi koi mil gaya tha,

yun hi koi mil gaya tha.sar-e-raah, chalte chalte.(Pakeezah)

This and'Thaare rahiyo o' banke yaar'are my favorite songs from this film.Lataji is in her element in this one.Absolutely beautiful rendition by the Melody Queen.

6.Aa aa bhi jaa, raat dhalne lagi, chand chupne chala.(Teesri Kasam).

An example of how well Lataji can convey pathos in her voice.

7.Kya jaanoon sajan, hoti hai kya gham ki shaam,

jal uthey sau diye, jab liya tera naam.(Bahaaron Ke Sapney).

This one is an unbelievable composition and what an extraordinary rendition by Lataji! I've run out of adjectives to describe this particular song.

8.Duniya kare sawaal to hum kya jawaab dein.( Bahu Begum).

Another beautiful song by the Goddess of Hindi Film Music.

9.Satyam Shivam Sundaram.(Satyam Shivam Sundaram).

This one again is a beautiful song(if you can block out the awful picturisation from your mind).

10.Dil ka diya jala ke gaya, yeh kaun meri tanhaayee mein.(Akashdeep).

How well Lataji conveys the feelings of a person who has probably just realised that she has fallen in love! The tune and lyrics are so simple yet so effective and wonderful.

11.Mai ree, main kaase kahoon peed apne jiya ki mai ree.(Dastak).

Another gem from Lata-Madan Mohan's winning combination.A brilliant song.I have no clue about who has sung it on screen and I have absolutely no desire to find out either.I have a sneaky feeling that the picturisation of this absolutely wonderful song could not have done justice to it.

12.Jo humne daastaan apni sunaayee, aap kyun roye,

tabaahi to hamaare dil pe aayee, aap kyun roye.(Woh Kaun Thii?).

Once again wonderful lyrics and absolutely divine rendition and music.Another song in which she has conveyed pathos so well.

13.Main to tum sang nain mila ke,

haar gayee sajna, haar gayee sajna.(Manmauji).

A simple song that conveys so much.It has simple lyrics, set to a simple tune yet it ends up becoming an outstanding song.

14.Megha chhaye aadhi raat, bairan bann gayee nindiya,

bata de main kya karoon.(Sharmilee).

Just love this one! Can't sing it however hard I try!

15.Rahen na rahen hum, meheka karenge,

bann ke kali, bann ke sabaa, bagh-e-wafaa mein.(Mamta).

Roshan and Lataji have given innumerable wonderful songs but this one has to be among their very best.

16.Rangeela re, tere rang mein, yun ranga hai mera mann,

chhaliya re, na bujhey hai, kisi jal se yeh jalan.(Prem Pujari).

An outstanding song once again from Lata-SDBurman team.I was slightly disappointed when I saw the picturisation. Even though Waheeda Rehaman was an excellent dancer, she couldn't do justice to the song.

17.Yun hasraton ke daag mohabbat mein dho liye,

khud dil se dil ki baat kahi aur ro liye.(Adalat).

This movie had few other brilliant songs-but this one is my favorite. What divine lyrics that is set to some wonderfully soothing music and sung in a way no body else can.

18.Aye mere dil-e-nadan, tu gham se na ghabraana,

ik din to samajh legi, duniya tera afsaana.(Tower House).

Another song where Lataji just lives the https://lyrics.She emotes through her voice and how?! This one has also been one of my favorite ones since childhood.

19.Jaa re, jaa re udd jaa re panchhi, bahaaron ke des jaa re,

yahaan kya hai mere pyaare, kyun ujadd gayee bagiyaa mere mann kii.(Maya).

Words can't do justice to the way I feel about this song.Absolutely wonderful lyrics and music and outstanding singing by Lataji.

20.Jaago Mohan pyaare jaago.(Jaagte Raho).

What a way to start the day! I will not mind waking up to this one even if I haven't had a good night's sleep.

The songs I've mentioned here are not in order of preference. And let me also assure you that there are atleast 500 more that I am crazy about.
