Are Women Managers Better

This has been an age old question in the corporate circle. I have worked under managers of both sexes, and I have also managed people of both sexes. The trick here is to stop comparing one to another. From what I have realized by my work experience spanning 18 years, the situation has completely changed from what it was a decade or 2 ago. And, I am happy that more women are coming out and becoming a significant part of this workforce. I have heard people say that it is a male dominated society in India, and it is completely different in the United States. It could be true to an extent, but the conditions are totally different here. There are a whole lot of single mothers living here, and it becomes imperative for the woman to work, to support herself and her kids. It’s the same in low income households in India, as a majority of the housemaids are women, and they end up working as they need more income to support their family. They might not be single mothers, but a good chunk of the percentage deal with abusive, and irresponsible husbands.

In the corporate world, in India, things are improving, and I feel it is only for the better. Working is no longer a necessity for the Indian Woman. It is a way of life and a feasible option. But for all those who stereotype the working conditions, and think that women have a better opportunity in the United States, are in for a rude shock. It hurts me when people in the western world think women do not work in India(To a lot of people in the western world, India is still a Third World Country), and are primarily housewives. I honestly ask people who have this stupid notion about women in India(and this has occurred in face to face discussions, if they are ignorant about certain societies or whatever is happening in the rest of the world. All along, and the facts can be checked, America never has had a woman who has been the leader of the country. We are better in India, as we have had a woman Prime Minister, and we have had prime ministers & presidents from different sections of the society. Does anyone sit and think why the United States does not have an African American as president till date.

Sorry for digressing earlier, but coming back to the original topic, I feel it is bad to compare who would make a better manager. I have realized that(and I am not being politically correct here) it just depends on the person, and the situation. We have to realize that men are good at certain things, and women are. Also, we have to realize that certain men might be good in certain situations, totally against the norm. Like chefs in hotels. It is primarily a male dominated job, and it is changing now. Women are the dominant force in the Porn Industry(and I hate to use this as an example, but it is true, and women do earn more than men in this industry), and nobody speaks about this. There are a lot of other areas in the workforce, where women are dominant. Another area where women are a dominant force is in the field of Administrative Assistants(or secretaries) and the Nursing field. I do feel sorry for my lack of knowledge that I cannot think of a lot of areas, where women are the dominant force.

So, the earlier we stop comparing the two, and realize that sex has nothing to with being a better manager; the better it is for us. Sometimes when it comes to physical labor(and I specify the fact that this is in general terms), men are better, and in certain other skills, women are much better.

A THOUGHT TO PONDER HERE IS, WOULD TRANSEXUALS MAKE THE BEST MANAGERS. SINCE THEY HAVE THE BEST OR WORST OF BOTH THE SEXES! .

iNTERESTING THOUGHT?

But the sorry state of affairs is that, they(transsexuals) do not have a respectable position in the society. This is extremely funny, considering the fact that people do read about Arjuna being a transsexual during his exile.

But, maybe discussion about transsexuals and their state in our society, could be reserved for another discussion.
