MEDIA V/S SACHIN

Time and again efforts have been made by the sections of the media to resurface the debate “ON THE GREATNESS OF SACHIN”. And best selling broadsheet in the country- “THE TIMES OF INDIA” and its sister electronic & online media counterparts have particularly dominated that section.

Its a saddening fact  that just for the sake of multiplying its revenue the ILLITERATE  sports media are trying to bring down one of the greatest batsmen of all time & a man who, without any doubt has selflessly contributed for his country.

Since  the Pakistan series in 2005 every week I have been finding  articles on sachin doubting his abilities & his ingenuity. His dismissal in the Peshawar test opened a never ending dark tunnel  of debates & speculation. It was an opportunity for this detractors like Moin Khan  to go on to say that ‘He fears fast bowling’. The times coined the term ENDULKAR and its cricket experts(I wonder if these experts have ever wielded a bat or ball in their hands) kept on writing articles saying that his time had come, he is on decline, there is no more fire in his belly and  that he plays for himself!

All this crap just because he couldn’t score a big hundred in the very first innings of the tour? Have we become so intolerant and foolish that we can doubt the abilities of one the most talented players in the game just because of this lone failure? Even a murderer is treated better by getting a life term and not a death penalty, for he could live the rest of his life being a better human being .

An average of over 55 in 120 odd tests and 44.5 in 350 odd ODIs - doesn’t it speak of his consistency? The main culprit in creating this hype has been the media. They  show us only one part of the story which is spicy and they themselves garnish it to sell out copies like hot pan cakes. People voicing their opinion against him have been put in the limelight and the opinion of experts backing him have been projected as being lacklustre.

Recently  I read an article on the INDIATIMES with the title as ‘LARA, DRAVID BETTER THAN SACHIN’ when I  read the content I was shocked to know that the conclusion  had been drawn since Lara has scored the highest innings score and sachin hasn’t, and  Dravid averages 57 while sachin averages  55.5?I have tremendous respect, admiration for both these players, but is it fair to draw comparisons between two players and jump to conclusion  on irrelevant facts?. I wont be surprised if tomorrow they draw comparisons between Dravid  and some other temporary star too. Well the moral of the story is that it is up to us as to be how much supportive of our idols, but my belief is that we shouldn’t mar his or her achievements or doubt their commitment because he or she has failed to deliver the goods at the time we expected them to require or  because the single minded media tells us to do so . BE TOLERANT AND HAVE FAITH IN YOUR IDOLS –THEY WOULD NEVER FAIL YOU.
