The main principle of homeopathy is very simple. If a medicinal substance causes certain symptoms, it can also cure the same symptoms. This was accidentally discovered by Hahnemann, when he learnt that cinchona, which was used to treat malaria, could cause malaria like symptoms if taken by a healthy person. This accidental discovery helped to create a new system of medicine. Homeopathy is like vaccination – making the body to create antibodies to heal itself.

An allopath prescribes antibiotics to cure an infection, the logic being - kill the germs and the disease disappears. But a homeopath prescribes medicines that boost the immunity of the patient, by doing so the body gets rid of the germs on its own. It is for this reason that homeopathy’s effects are longer. An allopath may prescribe the same medicines for all patients who have a cough. But homeopaths prescribe based on the patient – they study the specific symptoms of the patient and then prescribe.

Homeopathy is especially useful in curing chronic ailments. Not that it can’t cure acute ailments like fever, infection – it is useful, provided the right medicine is prescribes. There are over 1000 medicines (made from different substances likes plants, chemicals and even animal extracts) in homeopathy, making a homeopath’s job difficult. This makes homeopathy a difficult system to practice.

As a result there are many doctors whose prescriptions don’t work, but the patient thinks that it is homeopathy that doesn’t work. There are doctors who try to imitate homeopathy by having air-conditioned clinics and offering gold and silver cards. This commercialisation has hurt homeopathy. As a result of this, homeopathy’s popularity is not as high as allopathy.

Further, homeopathy uses very dilute medicines, in fact so dilute that it can’t be detected by a lab test. This is the controversial part of homeopathy, because of which scientists raise doubts. But that is the bueaty of homeopathy. This diluted sweet sugar pills cure and cure gently, without any side effects.

I have personally benefited from homeopathy. I used to have a severe tonsils problem from childhood and finally after taking antibiotics once in fifteen days, the doctor advised surgery. That’s when I discovered homeopathy. Within a month I was completely cured and even now, when I do get throat infections, I am able to cure myself through homeopathic medicines, which are as quick as allopathic medicines, less costly and more gentle on the body.

Homeopathy’s effectiveness has been demonstrated by many great doctors and lakhs of people, especially in India, have benefited. Killer diseases like cancer have been cured by homeopathy. Patients who have been on inhalers for years have given up their inhalers, thanks to homeopathy. Homeopathy does work and is very effective.
