A properly planned and executed holiday is best for one’s body and mind. A long awaited holiday will act as a refresher only when planned properly, else, it will only add on to your fatigue even more.

Mostly, holidays and trips are taken only to run away from the routine of life. Except for very few, most people take a vacation only to have fun and not to specifically visit places. A good holiday will give you the much needed rest and get you back all fresh and prepared to get back to work. Here are a few mistakes which most people make and so avoid them.

  1. No proper planning and crowding

Lots of people leave for a vacation without proper planning. They don’t know where to stay, they don’t know what places to visit; all they have ready is a ticket to one particular place. Atleast, have your accomodation booked before leaving home and enquire about the various restaurants there. And in most cases, even the train or flight ticket is not confirmed and till the last moment one is not sure of the journey. Hey, is this a good way to start your vacation?

Also, never pick a packaged tour which gives you an assurance of visiting ’15 places in 15 days’. By the time your 15 days gets over, you appear like you are back from a marathon and any attempt to recollect the places you had seen seems impossible. I am not driving you against any of these packaged tours, but just check if these tours give you ample time for rest and mostly avoid night journeys on bus.

  1. Choose the correct mode of transport

Never choose a transport which you are allergic to just because it is cheaper or faster. A bad beginning ruins your whole tour. Pick the right mode according to the place you are visiting, there is point in going somewhere by flight, to where you can drive or go by bus, because the whole time waiting time for the flight compensates for the fast travel.

  1. Never overpack your bags

Don’t pack half the stuff you have at home!( Esp women). I have seem women packing their whole makeup set which occupies nearly half thier luggage. I have a friend who brings 2 air bags for a two day trip. I remember reading once, that Mother Theresa, in all of her long tours and trips used to carry just one small bag which carried her bare necessities of a set of toiletries and one of her trademark saries. Now, that is what is good packing.

Large number of bags makes your concentration wading only to the safety of the bags and not to your fun. Not only that, it is a major pain to carry all your huge bags from place to place. Also, don’t pack valuables. Unless, you are going to attend a wedding or any other major function, don’t pack all you jewellery. Imagine the amount of sleepless nights you have spent in trains, thinking about their safety?!!

A few tips for small baggages --- As far as possible, carry disposable items; Women --- reduce your makeup items and mostly, carry lightweight clothes( preferably, a pair of jeans with a number of T shirts, instead of a number of salwar sets which are incomplete without a duapatta --- think about the amount of space that occupies?!); Avoid carrying a number of books, unless you are travelling alone, all that you end up doing is increasing the weight in your luggage.

  1. Carry the right kind of clothing and medicines

Depending upon the city you are on your way to, select the clothes. For a cold place, sweaters are a necessity, but at the same time, for a warm place, no gaudy clothes which will most probably end up making you feel uncomfortable. In addition, if you are allergic to something, make sure you have all the medicines relating to that.

  1. Arrange for all safety measures at home

Make all arrangements for your daily supply of newspapers, milk, magazines etc. to be cancelled or delivered elsewhere. As far as possible, pack your valuables and keep them somewhere else( maybe at the bank or a friend’s place) to evade robbery. Leave a proper message on your answering machine.

  1. Never hold a faulty attitudes to holidays

To be able to live in peace and quiet for sometime is a mark of maturity. So, never carry your work tensions or any other grudges to your vacation. It ruins the whole mood of the holiday.

Mostly, try not to go with someone whom you don’t get along well with just for the sake of a formality. It never helps you to rest.

Apart from this, have a checklist of all the stuff that you are carrying and ensure that you bringing everything back. Carry travellers’ cheque instead of cash. Take as much change as you can. Have all your extremely essential items such as tickets, passports, etc., in an easily accessible location. Be it a guy or a girl, make it mandatory to carry skin care items, atleast a sun screen.

A holiday’s success is measured by the results it produces. A good one is often marked by a mind, more pleasant, receptive and tranquil, and on the whole you must reminisce it as an amazing trip
