Children love stories. Wherever you go, children above 4 years would love to hear stories. May be the stories they wish to hear are different but all of them like stories. The fact is that a child’s mind is eager to know more and more about the world. Innocence is the identity of childhood. If one child is not innocent, I will say he/she is equal to grown up. Love to other human beings, love to nature, animals, birds they love all. Morals from these stories have a larger influence on them than anything else. No wonder moral stories for children were part of any grown up civilization. With time the imagination of children too increased.
Even though India possesses one of the biggest film industries in the world, films addressing to children have been a rarity. Last year December, Amir Khan brought a spark with ‘Taare Zameen Par’ and it touched many a hearts and money came together with it. Thoda Pyaar, Thoda Magic is a Yash Raj attempt to make a movie for children.
Ranbeer (Saif Ali Khan) is a big business magnet. Ranbeer’s careless driving took the life of 2 people, who were parenting 4 children. The court gave a controversial judgment and asked Ranbeer to take care of the 4 children who get orphaned by the carelessness of him. The 4 children were all determined to take revenge on Ranbeer. The children or Ranbeer are not comfortable and they pray to god for help. God (played by Rishi Kapoor) decide to send his dearest angel Geeta (Rani Mukherji) to earth. Watch how the angel brings harmony among them.
The movie is typically designed for children. There is nothing new in the story but that is for the grown up. For children, it is all new and a good experience. When we look from an adult’s view point, there are lots of drawbacks for the script; for children it doesn’t matter. The story is told in a nice way, I will say entertaining way. Considering there is not many films release for children, the effort need special applause. It is a good watch for children, where I am sure parents too will enjoy where for any loving parent the best joy comes when their children are happy.
Saif Ali Khan as Ranbeer was good. Saif was in his usual self and his performance was superb. Rani Mukherji was cool and she looks very cute as an angel. However, the four children were all good one to other and steal the show from the elders. Great team effort! Like the Chak De gang, the 4 children made as a gang. Rishi Kapoor as God was superb. Amisha Patel was all determined to be a glamour symbol, but she was good in many scenes. Overall the performance was very good.
Cinematography of any Yash Raj movie will be with quality and this time too they don’t disappoint. Good camera works. It could have been better but as it is the film gives good visuals. Scenes from heaven and beautiful places of earth…all done well. It is rare to see such scenes in Bollywood and for children it is definitely a treat. It will be the dream for many children now.
I felt the music was all borrowed from other films. Hangover of Taare Zameen Par music is evident. Eventhough individually those music were good, considering the theme of the film, most of them were out of place. Two of the songs however were good. The one with patriotic feeling is my pick.
Choreography was good. However, it could have been better. It is a shame that even films for children need to resort to skin show in dances. Otherwise choreographers did a good job.
Few good scenes from the film:
1. Rani coming down to earth in a bicycle through rainbow.
2. Amisha’s scenes in the court room.
3. Rani touches the tears on Saif’s face.
4. The song in the museum.
5. The chidren’s naughty plans.
6. The scenes from heaven.
The film is based on a thin storyline and the writers didn’t try on anything special and resorted to the normal story. There were many scenes which the writers could make it great but it all executed in the normal way without permitting it to the exact effect it could generate. There was a dog and a rat part of the gang earlier, but they disappeared in between without telling. Too bad! The change of mind of characters was too fast and such sudden changes were not justified. There is good number of flaws in the script but I think that is only for one who determined to look at it critically. For the audience the movie addressed to, (i.e. children) I think they will not be bothered much about the detailing.
The movie will be much appreciated by the children. Adults too may enjoy it. If you have children to take to theatres don’t forget to take them. It is a good watch for them. It is not a great movie like Taare Zameen Par, sure. But it is definitely worth a watch and most likely you may like it too.
