I first read this newspaper completely during a train trip few years ago when the vendor didn't have a ToI copy and so I was forced to buy this and I was hooked. The analysis done in this newspaper is simply outstanding. You pick any event and Hindu will always give a multidimensional picture. The articles in 'The Hindu' are generally from people of some intellectual stature.
What I like most is that it gives opinion from both the sides. So at a time when everyone was criticizing Arundhati roy for being pro-Naxals, 'The Hindu' came up with articles from her to get a feel of the other side. Critics have called it a pro-China (or even a communist) newspaper but these same critics have been hallucinating about an 'imminent Chinese attack on India' since 1962.
I am a regular subscriber now. The situation is this that if sometime during a trip or so, due to unavailability, I am forced to buy ToI or it's cousins, I feel disappointed. They remind me of the dark era when in the name of science news, I was served sex surveys and "aliens on Mars" theory!
'The Hindu' may not give much information about which actress is secretly dating which actor, or what's the name of the royal baby [!!] and will not carry a colorful picture of a skimpily clad model.....but do you really think that they are NEWS?
'The Hindu' delivers only meaningful news, which is what is expected from a newspaper.
