Previously seen as a part of my masters course, I saw this Movie'Colours of Paradise' once again. A tragic movie about a small blind boy named Mohammed(Moshen Ramezani), Colours of paradise is a film about his journey of life through his own spiritual paradise, where his curious mind is out to feel the beauty of nature, the warm love of god. It is a movie about how a visually impaired child draws a coloufull world of happiness around him, till his father breaks for him this illusionary bubble.
Mohammed is always disliked by his father Hossein Mahjub, who thinks of him as a real big burden standing in the way of his dreams. He cannot undertake the cost of educating Mohammed in special schools, that is why he sends this motherless creature to a blind carpenter, so that he can earn money and be of any good to him. Poor soul is very unhappy away from school, his sisters and his granny whis is played by Salime Feizi who delivers a moving performance as a joyous beacon of love in his life. It is at this point that Mohammed feels very left out and helpless, when he finally gets an idea that he is unwanted by his father. Granny departs for her heavenly abode, just the day before Hossein Mahjub was going to marry a girl of his choice. The marriage is called off coz it was considered a bad omen. Again blaming Mohammed for every bit of his troubles, his father tries to kill him by drowning him in the river. The unbearable cries of the child bring out the real humane man in Hossein Mahjub, and he realises his mistake but to his utter dismay it is already too late. Although the end was not so clear, but according to my interpretation the God's angelic lite touched Mohammed and he united with his god.
What I liked best is this movie was the Protagonist i.e Moshen Ramezani, a 12 year old boy, who has acted so well that the viewer will in every case feel pity for him. With his little hands he wants to feel each and everything eventually drawing shapes in his mind to fill out the paradise he has in his mind. This character has been brilliantly inacted by Moshen Ramzani and directed in turn by Majid Majidi, no wonder it was nominated for the oscars.
Next best thing to happen in this movie, were the dialogues; simple and subtle presentation teamed with heart wrenching sad realities. In the whole movie the lil boy's feelings are never given voice to, except the one scene where he pours his heart out to the totally strange carpenter employer, saying that little children are all liked by god, but those who are handicapped in some way are very special and close to god; but if this is true then why is god not taking care of what is most special and precious to him.
The story is also very sweet which in turn reaches out and connects to it's audience.
