I have been a couch potato for a long time.in fact I can easily blame my parents for that.They were the one who at a tender age(I meant my tender age!)…they made me hook on to the TV whenever I acted like a cry baby…and since old habits die hard…I still watch TV when I cry…or when I don’t cry as well…!
Coming to the topic…10 best shows/serials…I have short term memory…I do not remember the serials that I used to watch long time before the cable mania evaded the TV industry…I guess it was the 1990’s when this happened…please enlighten me if I am wrong…
The programmes which I think gave a whole new meaning to Indian television are as follows…These are just random listing and I may have missed quite a few here n there…please excuse for the same….
1.The earliest my memory takes me is Ramayana. …it was a well made program and gave a lot of information…My parents cajoled me into watching it to learn good values…the charm of watching this program is still there…you watch any of the so called mythological serials on the endless channels…the magical touch is missing…
2.Next in line is Chanakya again on DD…interesting and well packaged…Sunday mornings were never the same after Chanakya went off air…one hour of drama and the characters were well portrayed…I loved the person who played the central character…
3.Dekh Bhai Dekh was another favourite that time…the humour, the characters…they were perfect in there own small way…I loved the character of chachi…she did well with that…Shekhar Suman should thank his stars for bagging such a role…his career got a boom after this…i can still watch the repeats:)
4.Amul Surbhi- The show was too informative and interesting…the anchors Renuka and Siddharth were apt for the show…I wish they wouldn’t have pulled it off air….each episode was a treat to watch…n I loved the music….as in the tag line was good…
5.Now we come to the cable TV boom…The first to cash in was Zee TV…with Tara.modern girls, working, living single and even drinking and smoking….that was when people realised that women are not staying indoors doing nothing…they are willing to live a new independent life…I was too small for any such inference but I still remember all the characters…Tara was everywhere…each day many families glued in to watch the first soap opera of India…she was hated, debated but still watched and loved…
6.Hum Paanch was a personal favourite…the humour(senseless many a times), the storyline, each individual character was well fitted…my family could relate to it well…my dad felt like the main character a lot many times…reason being his 3 daughters…Tuesdays were fun because of Hum Paanch…and I still feel that Ekta Kapoor did a great job by doing this show…after that she has been repetitive…I am looking forward to the second innings of the show…
7.Bourvita Quiz Contest- Sundays were dedicated to this show…trying to answer each question, rooting for different teams…it was all fun and learning…the show was a great hit with all school students…you cant get better than Derek to host a quiz show…he is still the best in Quiz business…n he is charming to the T…
8.Kaun Banega Crorepati- It was a sure shot winner from the word go… Amitabh as the host, one crore at stake and Siddharth basu as the brain behind the show…you can’t get better than this…Advertisements galore, crores of sms’s, jammed phone lines to empty lanes at 9 pm sharp….we saw it all…hats of to the Amitabh for carrying if the show with subtle humor, oozing confidence( initial nervousness) and his well known charm…the way he interacted with common was touching…and the way people responded to him…it was purely from heart…
9.Various news channels and their respective programs- The beeline that various news channels made on the television industry is worth a mention…the so called famous age old faces of DD gave way to new crop of smart, young reporters who talked great…and looked even better…chic packaging, thorough research and highly competitive spirit…they have it all…sting journalism is now the new word in News reporting…my personal favourite remains Rajdeep, Prannoy and Barkha…in that order.
10.Ekta Kapoor's K Serials- You cant escape from her….she has invaded each channel with at least one soap opera…and she continues to do that even today…she has truly been the face of the Indian television…criticize her, compliment her but you cant ignore her….families watch her serials and relate to them…some even make new fashion statements with their atrocious wardrobes….women organisations are complaining about the women portrayals…but who cares…as long as the TRP’s are flowing in….you better watch them….not the best in business.my quantity sometimes matter.
That’s about it for now…Hey that is a pretty long list…I will not be editing any errors as of now…took a pretty long time to write this one…feel free to rip it apart or praise it…and you are welcome for your list of 10…
