When the TV is not an idiot box...

I ain't much of a TV addict...and when I reach for the remote control, I have precisely in mind what I want to see...

Besides NDTV 24x7, BBC and ESPN/Star Sports, the channels I regularly check for the latest in news or sporting events, NatGeo, Discovery and Animal Planet are on my must-checkout list every time I channel surf. Below are some shows I love to watch for they bring out something extra from that idiot box and make TV viewing much more worthwhile.

Full House - Zee Cafe

This is an extremely funny and interesting watch about a family in America. This serial was originally aired from 1987 to 1995. The family I'm talking about has three brothers, Danny(to whom the house belongs to), a widower with three girls, DJ, Steph and Michelle(played by Mary Kate/Ashley Olsen), Jesse, a singer/guitarist with his own music band whose wife is Becky...and their kids Nikki and Alex, and Joey, the fun guy in the family who's busy mimicking all the cartoon characters you can think of. This is a particularly good show for it teaches us some family values which we usually ignore amidst realistic situations, and with a few good, sensible laughs.

FRIENDS - Zee Cafe

Another must watch for me, as it provides me with all the jokes and laughs I need after that tiring day. Very popular serial, and I don't think I need to say much about this hilarious comedy involving six friends - Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Ross and Chandler.  Each character is intricately woven, and their funny bones tickle you to the maximum every time you watch this show.

New Detectives/Medical Detectives/FBI Files - Discovery

This real life crime show is so enthralling to watch that I never miss it every time I am home in the afternoon...thankfully, nowadays it also airs at night. This is a documentary type show involving real crimes and the minds behind the law who crack the cases. You will be amazed to learn how advanced technologies nab a killer or a thief, and how the tiniest clue leads to their arrests. Some infamous cross-border criminals' escapades leading to their downfall are also inculcated into the show. A must watch for any crime lover.

Gamer TV - Ten Sports

This is for the gaming lover in me. All the latest PC/Xbox/PS2 games that are released, together with the latest in gizmo are showcased here. Each new game/gadget is reviewed with aplomb, and we also get to view the developers such as EA Sports etc speaking about their products. Gameplay sections are very exciting as you get to see beforehand how the graphics have fared. An interesting show overall.

Luke's After Hours - Channel V

This music show airs after 11 pm, and is a nice change from the hindi songs that ait throughout the day. The logo of the show is a caricature of Cobain and Morrison, and what follows is suitable enough. Everything from Rock n Roll to Heavy Rock to Metal songs are telecast, and you feel this is what Channel V should air 24x7. Rare videos of the Doors, to REM songs, Jethro Tull, grateful Dead, Meat Puppets....one hell of a show to air at 11 in the night.

Horizon - BBC

This show does not air too much...only when the BBC reporters document some special event/personality do we get to view it. The theme remains intellectual but quite layman-friendly. For instance, interviews of scientist behind the atom bomb like feynman and Bohr have been recorded astoundingly well, as well as documentaries on the CRAY supercomputer. We have a lot of new things to learn about straight from the people who are masters in those fields of technological advancement. A fantastic show.

Johnny Bravo - Cartoon Network

I have no idea whether this is beyond the scope of this review but this is one show I rarely miss. The macho hunk who thinks he's oh-so-cool never gets anything from a girl but mouthfuls of abuse and well-directed kicks. Also has a small girl for company who always beats Johnny at everything they attempt to do together. Fantastic show to tickle your funny bone.

Face to Face - BBC

This is an interview show with a difference...for we get to see the same person in the seat of the interviwee and the interviewed.  Most questions are penned by the guests themselves and hence this novel show is very absorbing to watch, being devoid of any silly questions. Simply put, one of the best interview-shows in the globe.

Two of a Kind - Pogo

This is more of a kid's series starring the grown up Olsen twins. Bad part about it is that it's dubbed in hindi, but still an enjoyable watch. The trials and tribulations of two sisters growing up with a single parent(their dad) is very well narrated, and the show has a wacky sense of humour, besides the dollops of values in them as well. Fairly nice serial I watch when I feel like a kid.

Celebrities Uncensored - AXN

This is a funny show that documents the starry airs of hollywood celebrities when they are on-camera, albeit not on the silver screen! Yes, this show airs those paparazzi tapes from those behind the scenes moments at parties, nightclubs and every weird place you thought celebrities would usually avoid. And do you see them behave weirdly with the cameramen!! Expletives, signs and even muscle power are on view from any celeb you could think of...from Jennifer Lopez to Pam Anderson to Seinfield to Brad Pitt...as they are in real life..fun show to watch and highly recommended.

Other shows I missed out : Small Wonder(Star Plus), Skippy(Animal Planet), Different Strokes(Zee English)....actually there were quite a few good shows which are no longer on air...but the bunch above is still pretty interesting...
