Lata, Rafi, Asha, Kishor, …. all of them are legends in hindi playback singing.Although only Lata among them has received the ‘BharatRatna’award, others also deserve the same.I am a great fan of all of them.
But if one asks me to pick only one from them for the prestigious ‘BharatRatna’ award, undoubtedly I will select ‘Yesudas’
Being an ardent fan of him I would call myself ‘Das’ of ‘Yesudas’.
He is a singer born with the sweet, velvet voice which has bewitched many of music lovers for years.Virtually his voice is a goft of God and he must have mourished it through hardships and continuous practice.Afterall practise is the only thing that makes man perfect.
At present Yesudas has slightly stepped down his singing career.But he has ruled many hearts in the past.Though compared to south Indian languages, he has sung very few songs in hindi, he has made those songs simply immortal.
The special characters of his singing are ‘clear pronunciation’ and ‘depth of emotions’
These are the two qualities that made him favorite of many conniseurs.
He has sung all types of songs but his speciality is in devotional songs.In hindi they are very rare.But his Malayalam devotional songs have such a power that even a staunch etheist would start worshipping God after listening those gems.
5 years ago I had gone to Kerala .When I visited the famous Guruvayoor temple Icame to know that Yesudas was not allowed in the temple because of his non-hinduism
I felt very sorry . no … not for the music legend but for the temple authorities.
He was not allowed into just a structure but he has entered the hearts of many like me very long…long back
A real art does'nt know religious or any other boundaries.
I wish him a very happy and healthy life.and here is my list of 10 favorites.
10 O GORIYA RE(film:Naiya/music:Ravindra Jain)
RJ is the music director who utilized golden voice of YD for more times.A poor boatman who is so delighted when his beloved comes into his wornout boat to cross the river.YD makes his joy alive thro the vocal chords!
9 MANA HO TUM(Toote Khilone/Bappi)
Bappida sometimes gives sweet shocks This is one of them.(one more example-Kisi nazar ko tera)
All one way lovers, you try this song to get the green signal if you are not getting it despite continuous efforts in wooing.
8 KaHAN SE AAYE BADARA(Chashme Baddoor/Rajkamal)
A semiclassical song which shows the potent classical base and pure indian soul of YD
7 AYE MERE UDAS MAN(MaanAbhiman/RJ)
Again YD-RJ combination
When you listen this song you can very well judge the feeluings going on in the heart of the singer.
6 JAANEMAN JAANEMAN(Chhiotisi baat/Salil Chaudhuri)
YD proved his ability in western type songs like this one.and icing on the top is that my other deity Asha is with him. A great duet!
5 SUNAYNA(Sunayana/RJ)
Hero of this film helps a blind girl to gain back her sight. He sings for her
Aaj in taronko tum dekho, Aaj in nazaronkop tum dekho
Aur main tumhe dekhate hue dekhoo
You see all the stars, all the surroundings
I will watch you while seeing all that!
4 MADUBAN KUSHBOO DETA HAI(Sajan bina suuhagan/Usha Khanna)
Usha Khanna is one of the very very rare species! Female music director in Hindi
She has composed some very touching numbers like this.This song carries a depth of meanings!
Everyone in the world lives for oneself.Trully lives only those who live for others.How soft is his voice in this lovely song!
3 GORI TERA GAON(Chitchor/rj)
All songs from Chitchor are pleasant.I like this because it has roots into the our own INDIAN soil.It starts with YD’s humming and then the sweet piece of flute!It creates such a lovely atmosphere!I am now used to the polluted citylife but this song has the power to me back to my sweet memries of village life.
The calm and quiet and the simplicity of the local people(Alas!….gone are the the days)
2 TU JO MERE SOORME(Chitchor/rj)
one more from Chitchor.A romantic song sung with chastity.It shows the gentleness of a true lover.Whenever I listen to this song I always feel no need to listen further!
1 KA KAROO SAJANI(Swami/RajeshRoshan)
My very favorote song from the age of about 6.I think this is the semi-classical song that pioneered my little bit music sense.
