Music from the north of the great lakes...

It's no secret that the lion's share of the music industry(English) is owned by British and US acts. This is by no means a statement that other countries do not produce quality acts that produce great music. The Scorpions hailed from Germany, ABBA, Roxette and A-Ha are all Scandinavian. the list is long.

Canadian acts have played significant parts in the evolution of modern day music and have given us some memorable music.

Here are my personal picks of best Canadian Acts with short narratives on each:

N. Young - considered the father of grunge, Young music was raw, intense and featured some deep https://lyrics. He had a steady string of hits in the  late 60s and early 70s and some hit records, the most notable of them being, Harvest. Young's music touched genres like folk and blues rock. He was a part of the legendary supergroup - Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Bryan Adams - The clean cut, boy next door looks and a string of popular rock songs gave Bryan Adams a huge fan following and cult status. Known mostly for his songs like'Summer of 69', 'Everything I do', 'Run to you', 'Please forgive me' etc. He also did a brilliant soundtrack for the animated movie'Spirit'.

The Guess Who - They were a Canadian supergroup that were on par with some of the greatest bands of all times. However, they feature in my list for one intense and brilliant song called American Woman

Now comes the tricky part, the rest of my picks are all female acts(except for my final one)

Alanis Morisette - There's only one word that comes to my mind when it comes to Alanis - Brilliant. Her powerful vocal renditions, violent lyrics and excellent songwriting skills have made her an icon - a singer/songwriter par excellence. Her third album Jagged Little Pill propelled her into mainstream. My personal favourite? Uninvited - one of the most intense songs you will ever hear.

The next two are two legends - Anne Murray and the incomparable folk legend Joni Mitchell. Murray is one of the most prolific artistes to ever come out of Canada. Mitchell, a multi-talented musician and painter, was a major influence on many artistes including the brilliant, Sheryl Crow.

Another brilliant performer from Canada is a lady who took Country music by storm and dominated every US act in this genre - the incredible Shania Twain. This multi-award winning artiste has spawned a series of successful records including the popular Come on over

Canada also gave the world that diva, Celine Dion, known for her velvet smooth vocals and the Titanic title track(sorry. she doesn't ring my bell but she's successful!).

Other noteworthy performers include Avril Lavigne, Sarah McLaughlan, k.d. lang and Nelly Furtado.

Finally, my favourite Canadian band:

Rush

The incredibly talented Rush comprised of:

Geddy Lee - bass, guitars, synths, foot pedal synths and vocals

Alex Lifeson - guitars, foot pedal synths

Neil Peart - Drums and percussions

The trio became progressive rock Gods and released a slew of albums that featured brilliant works that exhibited Lifeson's guitar prowess, Peart's brilliant lyrics and amazing stick work and Lee's hook laden bass lines and unique vocals.

Rush may not be a known band as the genre is limited to a bunch of people who love technical brilliance. As such the music might not even appeal to followers of mainstream  and predefined patterns. However, if you love a band that possesses incredible musical abilities and can churn out music that makes your jaw drop, Rush works for you.

Notable songs include the brilliant Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Closer to the Heart, Red Barchetta and epic songs like Xanadu and Trees.

This rounds up my picks of Canadian acts. Cheers.
