Books have always played a very helpful part in me leading a better life. Like music it is very difficult to choose what books I like. So I would rather go for authors than the books ... I feel I would do justice to the books then.

1. Colleen Mc Cullough

I started my reading with this author's books. I loved her Thornbirds which is about the robust and romantic saga of the Cleary family set against the backdrop of an Australian sheep station.  Next book which I really liked was Tim which was her first novel. Tim is a romantic story between a boy ( played by Mel gibson in the movie) who is mentally handicapped and a forty something woman.  Both the books have been made into movies.

2. Wilbur Smith

He is one of my favourite authors. If I am travelling or if I am on a vacation I would definitely like to chill out with his books. I have read almost all his books. His books pack a good punch and he blends adventure, romance, intrigue and suspense very well. He writes more about Africa and recently he has written stories set in Egypt. Egypt and Africa both have a rich culture and this author knows how to bring out the vivid representation of these two countries.

Some of his books which I liked were The Sparrow Falls, Rage, A time to kill, River God, the Seventh Scroll, A time to Kill, to mention a few. What I like about this author is that there is continuity.. its like he writes a whole series about a family.. and you would like to know more and read more about the characters... something like a trilogy but the books dont stop at number three.

3. Leon Uris

This author is a powerful author and he writes very powerful stuff. He stories are based on true stories and his books. His novels often deal with struggles for political and religious freedom, and he has been honored with many awards. His raw material comes from his real life experience which makes the story all the more real.

Again I have read almost all his books. The best part about his books are that I can read the books again and again without feeling bored.

Some of his books which I liked  are Mila 8, The Haj, and Milta Pass, Battle Cry, Exodus, Topaz, QB VII, and Trinity. The last five books were New York's bestsellers.

4. Robin Cook

This author is another favourite of mine. He is unique.  He specialises in medical thrillers. He also writes stories which are based on facts and these stories would be very probable in real life. For example, in Vector he mentions how Anthrax is used for bio-terrorism and we are not that far away from that fear today.

I have covered almost all his books... :):).

Some of his good books are Coma, Sphinx, Mindbend, Brain, Harmful Intent, Chromosome 6, Terminal, Vector,, etc.

5. Gita Mehta

I started reading Indian authors with Gita's books. I realise that Indian Authors have great potential if and when they get the right exposure.

Some her books which I liked are Raj, a historical novel about the maharajas and the early phases of India's independence struggle, A River Sutra a novel of quest stories woven into an exquisite tapestry of secular-humanistic philosophy and Snakes and Ladders a set of wide-ranging essays about India since independence.

6. Upamanyu Chatterjee

I have read only one of his books which is English August and I was impressed by it. I would love to read more of his works.

7. Guy De Maupassant

His collection of short stories are a very good read. I can read them anywhere, anytime.

8. Leo Tolstoy

His books are classics and well I always like to get into his stories when I have enough free time.

Some of his books which I found really captivating are Anna Karenina and  A confession. If you are interested you can read the html version of his books at https://books.mirror.org/gb.tolstoy.html

9. Jeffrey Archer

A great author with great talent for writing amazing plots.  His plots can never be boring or repetitive. I still cannot put down his Kane and Abel every time I read it.

Some other books of his which I liked are **The Prodigal Daughter, Shall We Tell the President?, A Matter of Honor

First Among Equals, Not A Penny More, Not A Penny Less, The Fourth Estate **, etc

10. John Grisham

Well I have not read much of his books but what I read..I liked it a lot and I would definitely like to read some more of his books. His books have great legal thriller plots.

I liked his A time to Kill, The client, The Pelican Brief and The Rainmaker. I liked the movies too as I had read the books earlier..

Well these are my ten favourite authors. Besides this, I also liked Harold Robin's A stone for Danny Fisher and Adventurers ( very un-Harold Robins like), Richard Bach, Sidney Sheldon ( I have read almost all her books too), Irving Wallace, Dostoevsky etc. I also liked Satyajit Ray and Vikram Seth's writings. I also like to enter the astral world with Linda Goodman's books.

Thats my list which gets updated in my mind every now and then.
