I was stuck with Suntv Hd settop box for nearly 8 months .Bought it as they were showing ipl cricket at that time.But soon things went from bad to worse as they reduced the number of hd channels from 7 to 5(while others were increasing hd channels) which included 2 movie channels tamil and Telugu which repeated 10 to 15 movies over and over again.Clearly it showed they were not too interested in adding hd channels in a hurry.I decided to switch to tatasky. Videocon d2h has more hd channels but I was not sure about the picture quality in hd channels. I decided to play safe and buy tatasky + hd dvr.it has a storage capacity of 500 gb.
You can record 2 channels simultaneously and watch it whenever you like.often we find it tiring to watch an entire movie at a stretch.Most of the movies I recorded so far were watched by me in 2 or more sittings.
Another unique feature of a hd dvr box is that it starts recording a channel in its buffer area as soon as you switch to that channel..say suppose you have been watching a channel for 10 minutes all the 10 minutes would have recorded so that you can rewind immediately and watch again( of course when you rewind and watch the live programme will be ahead.you can always catch upto live tv by fast forwarding).this feature is called pausing live tv.but if you switch to another channel after 10 minutes the recording of the previuos channel in the buffer area would be lost and the set top box would start recording the new changed channel.the buffer area would normally be 45 minutes but it can be increased manually.Apart from this there is the normal recording feature where you select the programme to be recorded from the programme guide and press record.It can also record entire series but to use this feature the settop box should be always on whereas most of us switch off at night.
All in all, a hd dvr box is anyday better than a regular hd set top box and the cost is only marginally higher.Most of us have forgotten about recording programmes after the demise of the vcr and the hd dvr
sort of takes us back to those days.
