I had this  moped with me for  5 years( 1998-2003) and  here is what I have to say about it.

My dad brought this moped for me to commute to my College and it was my chief mode of transport for one whole year.

The strong point about Super XL is its peppy engine. Though that may not sound convincing if you look at its specification(3.5 BHP and 5Nm of torque), you would agree with me if you ever rode it.

General Observations(First the Pain areas)

1) My bike came with a faulty carburetor from the show-room and was a pain to start and also did not return good average per liter. Neither did I nor the show room guys had a clue(or was it that they never wanted to admit it). I finally got it fixed at my own cost when I found out. I have also observed that this model in particular gives out a metallic sound when pushed to beyond 35 Kmph(Engine knocking?).

2) Oil leak from the transmission case cover is also another problem frequently seen(This persisted in my bikes case even after they replaced the side cover).

3) The brakes are such a let down. The brakes seem to have been designed for a cycle than a moped.

4) Poor front suspension(Since the bike is designed for 130 kg payload, the suspension should definitely be much better).

5) The Silencer has a tendency to rust over a period of time even after much care(Avoiding humid conditions by Keeping in a garage, using wax polish etc.).

6) The TVS brand tires that came with the bike were of such poor quality that one tube just blew up on the road when my father was driving. Thank god nothing happened and we replaced the tire with an MRF one. This is not the only case that I have come across this problem. TVS tires that come with the bikes are of very bad quality and the best thing you can do to avoid(such dangerous) situations is by replacing(Both the tire and tube) with a better brand.

7) The chain and Sprocket are not rugged enough for the bikes engine, and do give a lot of problems.

8) The storage space provided just under the seat can be a bit larger and the lid for it right now needs a lot of getting used to, to lock it properly.

The Good things about the bike are

1)      Strong peppy engine

2)      Very good floor mat( really good)

3)      Long seat for two

4)      Good driving position

5)      Light and easy to drive

6)      Fairly economical

LOG Book data,

Years with me: 5 years( 1998 – 2003)

Odometer reading: 21, 000 Km

Average per liter of petrol: 45 km.

Summary:

The mopeds as such need more maintenance when compared to motorcycles and scooters. The strong point about this moped is Low cost and light weight. TVS XL super is used primarily by delivery boys and small business people who need a practical bike with low initial cost. If it meets your criteria then go for it.
