I loved the film-it is far better than the Khans crap that is sweeping Bollywood audiences with SRK starting the declining trend with Chennai Express and Aamir joining him in Dhoom 3. By the way, Happy New Year is a new low by SRK.

At such a tortutous time, this film is a balm for serious viewers of Cinema. The first half is comparable to English Vinglish where we see the Nani of sharman joshi subject(Our protagonist Nani played by Rekha) to constant humiliation by her CEO husband, aspiring actress daughter in law, ultra modern daughter and a gambler of a son.

Despite all her well meaning actions, her worth is zilch in the family. Sharman is an act of relief in her life and he advises her to change herself after Randhir Kapoor(her CEO husband) publicly humiliates her. All songs are melodious and meaningful. Sharman's own romantic angle is too short and actually distarcts from the mainline story. After her aspiring modelling career is nipped in the bud by her family, she decodes to fight back and defy the odds with ispiration from Mann(Sharman Joshi), his love interest(Shweta Kumar) and her childhood friend Anupam Kher, who heads an ad agency.

The second half is a let down with plenty of exaggeration, meaningless songs but Rekha holds the plot together as she tries to show tough love to her kids and ultimately her husband. Eventually she gains her rightful place in the family and Sharman and his love go back to their country as happy people. What made an instant impact on me was the short montage on mothers in the opening minute of the film. It was indeed an extremely powerful opening and Sharman is indeed a superb actor with his emotional roles spanning Ferrari ki Sawari, 3 idiots, Rang de basnti, etc. Watch this film for Rekha and Sharman and to releive your senses from the senseless crap of films such as Happy New Year.
