So MS team does come up with a contest that will boost product reviews. Cheers!

---------------------------------------------------------

I was just reading about this contest, at home when suddenly came a very disturbing sound, like a motor whirring, not to mention some flicker on the TV. Disturbing as it may be, it returned a smile on my face. The sound was familiar and it meant that “Chutney” was ready which meant fresh idli-chutney will be served in another 5 minutes time. My hungry stomach was smiling more! You must have guessed by now, what could have produced that sound.

So with a mood set, I begin with, mixer grinder – SUMEET mixer grinder. (brand is important here!).

Firstly three cheers to the lady with a dream I mean Mrs. Madhuri Mathur - almost 40 years ago this woman dreamed of a kitchen machine that would blend, chop, mince and totally make her life easier and then discussed it with her Engineer husband. And then the Sumeet mixer was born and is a household name still. And my wife (would be) dreams only of dresses, gold and diamonds, wasting my engineering skills…LOL

As is the trend in India, nobody buys a mixer for self. You always get one as a gift, sometimes even 4. Tsk! Tsk! We got ours as gift too, 10 years back. We got one more, which wasn’t Sumeet and stopped working 9 years back. So is it clear that Sumeet mixers have a long long life?

Thanx to my memory, I remember that Sumeet mixer comes with a Heavy duty 550 watt, 3/4HP motor, which is very reliable and secret for its long life. Believe me, cause I am an Electrical Engineer myself. Besides the main mixer body (that houses the motor), there were two interchangeable mixing jars - one for normal stuff a mixie is used and the other one for juice, milkshake kind. As a special offer, there was a small chutney attachment. Then there was one big red plastic spatula and a cleaning brush, a manual and of course several blades. What I don’t remember is whether there was any guarantee card, but going by common sense (my specialty), I think there was one. How many years? I don’t remember (my other specialty).

About Mixer body: It is plastic L shaped body that has white bottom portion and red top. On this top portion there are some grooves through which the jars are fitted and locked tight. There is some component that looks like impeller blades, which meshes with the rubber attachment below the jars. It is this component that transmits the motor’s rotating motion to the blades in the jar. (Like I told you, it takes an engineer to realize this…LOL). Below there is a red lamp for ON/OFF detection, a knob that helps in varying the motor speed and a yellow push button used for whipping (eggs or milkshakes). There is tiny red push button at the bottom of mixer, which is supposed to be pressed in case you have overloaded the motor.

About jars: They are of stainless steel and are V shaped that facilitates easy cleaning operation. The lid has a peculiar shape with a funnel like shape on top, through which one can add ingredients and water. Now a-days, it also comes with a stirrer – to stir, of course, but even during operation. I don’t have this. (sob!) The lid neatly snaps to the jar by hooks at four locations and has a rubber gasket used to prevent spillage. The smaller jar (Chutney attachment) is cute and the lid is simple with no funnel etc.

About blades: There are several types. The whipper blade, looks like circular disc, can serve up lip-smacking milk shakes, buttermilk, and fruit cocktails. It can also be used for mixing, blending, and whipping, especially with that yellow push button I mentioned that seems to add some up and down motion to the normal rotating motion.

When fitted with the Chopper/Grater Blade, the Stainless Steel Jar has a variety of uses ranging from carrot grating onions, carrots, cabbage etc to ice crushing and meat mincing. So you can make terrific chicken burgers, koftas and kebabs right at home. (when you do that, please invite me).

The Sumeet Stainless Steel Jar has a specially designed Dry Grinding Blade for grinding dry ingredients. And with the Mixing/Blending Blade it is capable of also grinding tough pastes. The manual also mentions kneading of dough.

The blades can be easily fixed to the jar or removed with the help of spatula. What! I thought you use it like spoon. Well yes certainly, but behind it has the hexagonal socket in which the blade can be attached. Then screw the blade to the jar and pull the spatula. Lo! The blade came out too. Hey, it’s not as easy as that. Needs practice. Also when you screw the blade to the jar hold the rubber below the jar or else the blade will continue rotate w/o getting screwed.

(For heavens sake don’t attempt this with hand, these stainless steel blades are sharp. I once attempted this and the mixer was ON, with knob on zero. And as I leaned to fix this blade, my body pushed against the yellow button and the next instant my reflexes had my hand out of the jar and then I could hear my scream…Aaaaarrrrrrrgggggg…with blood dripping from my fingers. I wouldn’t want to sound odious, but I could also see my white bone. So please be careful!)

Overall the best mixer in Asia. Sumeet has mixer variants. I am talking of DOMESTIC 950 but the big brother is called SUMEET ASIA KITCHEN MACHINE and the small brother is called MULTI-GRINDER mixer. It is unbelievable but its available in US too.

Though these days I am hearing about some “Maharaja” name too in mixer segment, I strongly swear by Sumeet mixer. But hey you need not buy one. Just have some grand function and wait for your gift.
