Update: This review below was written in 2002. Since then there has been a phenomenal change in Sulekha. I have long since stopped patronizing that site. This review hence is no longer relevant. Proceed at your own risk. (Venu Vedam - November 22, 2011)
I have been visiting Sulekha since November 1999. It is pretty addictive. Once you are in, you are in forever. It is like Hotel California. You can check it out anytime you want, but you can never leave. Activity on this website starts at around 8am when the IT departments of most corporates in the US start their day. It then picks up astronomical momentum. Imagine posting a query on the life-style of ABCD women and getting bombarded by the women folk of Sulekha at the rate of three posts per minute. I am not exaggerating. That is Sulekha. It lets you interact with people at almost real time! It is the next best thing to chat for proxy driven users. Result? Corporate employees and contractors spending their official time on this great website expressing views, publishing stories and getting back comments, brickbats, opinions and even marriage proposals! One typical day at Sulekha tells you everything about the growing divide between Indians and Indian Americans... affectionately called FOBs and ABCDs. They always fight with each other. Other interesting and e(o)ver active discussions include ''Arranged Marriages and Love Marriages''. But if you think Sulekha is just a venting point for attention seeking socially inadept young Indian men, you cannot be more wrong. People discuss about CNN's bias, Saki's short stories, Goethe's poems and Indo China military balance. If that doesn't satisfy you, digest this: Subhash Kak, a well known Indian philosopher has a exclusive column in Sulekha. Abbas Tyrewalla, the script writer of Asoka is a Sulekhite. Nagesh Kukunoor, the guy who produced Hyderabad Blues is a Sulekhite. Sulekha lets you connect with people all over the world... not only Indians but all the Desis. But be forewarned, You are home@Sulekha and you will not be able to leave it. I am a master of the act of getting deaddicted from Sulekha though. I have done it six times so far! Venu.
