There is this quaint little restaurant just Off Carter Rd, Khar (w) in Mumbai called SPICE. I would always pass the place on my way in the evenings and would get a whiff of the most amazing aromas which would make my stomach rumble with the pangs of plain greedy hunger. Then one day I finally decided to end my torture and visit the place for dinner.
On entering the place, the first thing that struck me was it's size...it being so tiny.It probably boasts of just 6-7 tables in all. It has a pleasant decor. A small staircase leads to the top floor which is where I usually like to sit now. Of course, it's a tight squeeze for people who are on the taller side like me. It might just feel a little cramped at first. But once you are seated, the food takes over completely and you tend to forget the initial discomfort.
The menu of Spice offers a variety in Indian, Chinese and Tawa cuisine. I have yet to try their Chinese food but I can vouch for their Indian and Tawa items. Their Tandoori rotis (Rs 7 each) are simple delicious. I dont know what is different, probably the flour that they use, but they are so fresh and crisp that one can eat it on its own too. And their Garlic Nan (Rs 15) is something to kill for. Yeah, yeah, you definetly need to add butter to it to get the authentic taste. Dont miss out on this one. We ordered some starters - Tandoori chicken (Rs 130), kebab platter (Rs75) and Mushroom Tikka (Rs 70). I have tasted better Tandoori chicken but the kebabs and the tikka were very well marinated and cooked. For the main course we ordered Butter Chicken (Rs 80), which was simply amazing!!! The thick tomato based gravy was simply delicious. It was followed by Palak Chicken (Rs 75, which was ordered on a whim). What I liked about this dish was that the taste of palak was not killed by the other spices which lent more authenticity to its name. On the vegetarian side the Methi Malai Mattar (Rs 65) and the Paneer Tikka Masala (Rs 70) were yummy too. The dal fry (Rs 45) is also a must..actually we always try out the dal fry where ever we go because we like the different seasonings that everyone gives to the same dal (lentil).
They dont offer much for people with a sweeth tooth, so we decided to give the dessert a pass. But they definetly offer gulab jamuns, kulfi and Faloodas. I would rate SPICE very high on my good food list. Gosh! all this description of food has made me hungry. Maybe i'll break for a snack and come back to write another review. Cheerio!!
