Dharmendra makes a second comeback,after ?Kis Kiski Kismat?,not as an actor but a producer,with ?Socha Na Tha?.This film had been in making since many years and after so many delays,it finally released on 4th March 2005.The film marks the debut of another Deol,Abhay Deol,who is Dharmendra`s nephew.Will he succeed like Dharmendra,Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol?Well,that is to be seen.
Vijayta Films.?Socha Na Tha?,directed by Imtiaz Ali,stars Abhay Deol,Ayesha Takia,Ayesha Jhulka,Suresh Oberoi,Raj Zutshi,Rati Agnihotri,Apoorva Jha and Sandhya Mridhul.This film was actually,actress Ayesha Takia`s first film,but unfortunately it released,when she was already two films old,but this film definitely shows that she can carry off a film on her shoulders,as a solo actress.
The film revolves around Viren (Abhay Deol),who likes a girl called Karen (Apoorva Jha),since three years,but he has never proposed to her,because of two reasons.First of all,he fears what if she rejects him and secondly,he is not so sure about his family`s reaction after he proposes to her,as Karen is Christian and he is a Hindu.One day,Viren is told by his sister-in-law (Ayesha Jhulka),that his father,Mr.Oberoi (Suresh Oberoi),wants him to meet a girl,for the purpose of marriage.
Just like a typical Indian son,Viren goes to meet the girl,whose name is Aditi (Ayesha Takia).First of all,when he sees her,he thinks that she is a typical Indian lady,who is a very obedient girl,etc.,but what he finds out is a shock.Aditi turns out to be a very modern girl,who feels that the concept of a girl bringing tea for her in-laws is an outdated one.
Viren tells Aditi about Karen and Aditi tells about Mahesh,someone whom she loved earlier and for whom she used to jump off her balcony,but is not in contact with him anymore.Both of them,Viren and Aditi plan,that they will not agree to the marriage.Finally,they decide that Viren will be the one who will disagree.As per their decision,Viren declares that he doesn`t want to get married to Aditi.
This makes Aditi`s family members,such as her aunt (Rati Agnihotri) and her brother (Raj Zutshi),very angry and so,Viren`s family and Aditi`s family become each others greatest enemies.After somedays,Karen and Abhay are very much in love with each other and they decide to go to Goa,but Karen cannot find an excuse to go to Goa.
Aditi helps Karen,by telling Karen`s parents that she is her friend and for her wedding Karen has to be there.So,finally Karen gets the permission to go to Goa.In Goa,Viren and Aditi spend lots of time together,and they become the best of friends.Looking at their closeness,Karen begins to feel insecure,but remains silent,throughout.When they are all back from Goa,Viren gets confused that whether he loves Karen or ADITI?
One day,Aditi`s brother sees Aditi with Viren and all hell breaks loose.A big fight takes place between Aditi`s and Viren`s families.Due to this,Aditi has to get married,soon.On the other hand,a confused Viren proposes to Karen and after lots of convincing,Viren`s family members agree to get him married to Karen,the Christian girl,but by now,Viren realizes that he loves Aditi but now,it`s too late?
How will he leave Karen?How will he convince his family ?again?,that he is not in love with Karen,anymore but is in love with Aditi and Aditi is also getting married.What will happen now?Will Viren and Aditi be able to go against all odds?
Abhay Deol lokks very promising in his first film,and is a complete natural.His face expressions and his dialogue delivery is all perfect.What he needs to do is that he should first of all,do something about his hairstyle and should develop his body,because he looks like a kid.Also,he needs to work a bit on his childish voice.Other than that he deserves a ten out of ten,in his performance.
Ayesha Takia is also natural to the core.The girl looks very cute and also oozes lots of confidence.She has proved that she will definitely have a very bright career in Bollywood,because she has it all that takes to be a Bollywood heroine.
Others also act very well.Suresh Oberoi as Viren`s strict father is good.Ayesha Jhulka as Viren`s lovely ?bhabhi? is fantastic!Apoorva Jha as Karen is just about okay.Rati Agnihotri as Aditi`s strong-headed aunt does an excellent job and Raj Zutshi also lends an able support.Sandhya Mridul as Aditi`s siter is terribly wasted and she has no dialogue in this film.No,wait,maybe she has only one dialogue to deliver.Who cares?
Imtiaz Ali`s direction deserve full marks because he has managed to make an entertaining film,out of such a waferthin plot.There are some really entertaining scenes in the film.The scene,where Viren goes to meet Aditi at her house,is fun to watch and their talk is surely going to get your attention.
The scenes,which follow next in Goa,especially the scene,in which Aditi and Viren get on a mountain during night,and tell each other that they like strip-tease,are very entertaining and cute.The fight scenes between Aditi`s family and Viren`s family are also hilarious.
The scene,when Viren doesn`t want to get married to Karen and goes to her house and tell her parents that after her marriage she will have to change her religion,makes you laugh.The climax is also very different and cute.Screenplay is fine but at times,half-baked.For instance,you would never understand Viren`s sudden change of heart.By the time you will blink,you will get to know that Viren has fell in love with Aditi.When,how and where?These are the questions which will start getting onto your mind.
When Viren realizes that he has started liking Aditi,why does he propose to Karen and convinces his parents for letting him to get married to Karen?Secondly,when Aditi is getting married she tells to Viren that she is getting married to her ex-boyfriend Mahesh?How did she patched up with him again?Mahesh`s character has been given no scope in this film,at all.Editing is crisp and the film moves at a fast pace.Cinematography is quite good.
Sandesh Shandilya gives a wonderful music.?O Yaara Rab? which comes during the end credits is a very pleasant song.?Abhi Abhi Mere Dil Main? which comes when Aditi and Viren are at Goa is quite entertaining.The proposal song,where Viren proposes to Karen is also very good and ?Socha Na Tha? is a beautiful song,which comes when Aditi and Viren realise their love for each other.
On the whole,?Socha Na Tha? is a very entertaining film,which would definitely turn you on if you are in a bad mood.The film has excellent performances,good direction,different dialogues and great music as its plus points,and by adding all these factors,you get a good movie,worth your time and money.Worth a watch!
