Ok so I dont understand a word of tamil other than na onna kadalikaray, paityum, ni epdi irke... but I have been a lover of tamil songs, music, movies since I saw agni natchatram way back on dd... and so I arranged tickets for the first days show of sivaji in a multiplex called fame in mumbai. my first rajni film without sub-titles and on the big screen and on the opening day!!! as I was rushing in as the movie was starting, I saw aditya chopra (yes THE aditya chopra) sitting waiting for the film to start...
So u see the kind of buzz this movie has created... and then the magic began... rajni's appearance and we all screamed, whistled and danced... have not heard this kind of noise in a theatre (the last was watching a sunny deol starrer in jalandhar)... the movie is fantastic. u dont need subtitles to understand the plot, but I kept regretting that I shd hv learnt tamil, as I missed out on the punchlines... my tamil friend tried to keep translating for me... "pigs come in herds, but a lion prowls alone"... "sivaji.. are you trembling when u hear my name?" (chumma addira gilla?) the songs have been picturized well... very well...
The sets at ramoji rao rocks, and so does oru kodu sunlight / style shot in spain... simple plot: nri boy returns to india, with dreams of doing work for the development of the nation... corrupt politicians block his way... and at one point sivaji is broke with only a rupee coin (brilliant coin stunts, and how he gets that one rupee coin)... and sivaji like the lion he is fights back... and how!!! the comedy is bang-on... sivaji's sidekick a very famous comedian is brilliant... and shreya/sriya the heroine is va va voom... she is so gorgeous... rajni is looking so damn cool thru the film.. he appears in almost 15 difft looks - in songs, in the film... manish malhotra's styling is fantastic... and the action - well its mind-blowing... stunts and wire-work galore... he flies, he battles thirty men, he swings, he kicks, he punches... he attacks them with a guitar, with sticks and with his bare hands too... the action is fantastic... and the climax shot in pune is brilliant...
Check out his brand new first time tonsured/shaved head look... he looks a lot like rapper blaaze whose songs are a hit from this film... the soundtrack (i bought it on its first day of audio release) is brilliant... rahman is a genius... it grows on you... and for me who doesnt understand tamil... the music is important - the grooves, the tunes, the orchestrations - its fantastic... the set in which vaaji vaaji is shot will take your breath away... the first song in the movie is balleiaka - a tad disappointing in its picturisation but what a brilliant song!! and shankar appears in the song for a few seconds!! and let me squash the rumor that amitabh bachchan and mammooty is in the film - they are not...
One sivaji is more than enough to explode the screen... what can I say, but in the words of sivaji - COOL!! I cant stop raving on the film... will go again and watch it this week... language is not a barrier when rajni is on screen - u just sit back and watch him in action... god bless rajnikanth... and may sivaji break chandramukhi's 800 days' record. in a running time just under 3 and a half hours Sivaji is a must-watch!! and he has new styles - he eats chicklets/gun thru the film - check his new style of putting it in his mouth. also how he flips coins, and lastly how he flips his sunglasses when he is bald... and he plays music on his bald head... fantastic!!!
