Beware! My sincere advise to prospective patients. Don't go on Father's name. Dr Ashok Shroff, the renowned name is misleading gullible patients like me.

My uncle, aunt, sister, brother-in-law and even daughter were operated by old man, Dr Ashok Shroff so well that at the age of 66 when cataract was detected in my both eyes, I consulted Dr Ashok Shroff. He indicated that my cataract surgery could wait for a year or two, but if I want get it done now I could do it. Since I was using progressive glasses for far, medium and near sight correction and in case of any other complication arising in near future due to age I decided to get it done now. He then diverted to his son Dr Anand Shroff since Dr Ashok had stopped conducting surgeries due to his age which was fair. That was the mistake and made and my ordeal commenced.

He suggested that surgery for both eyes could be done with a week's gap and a Multifocal lens be installed during surgery to take care of my eyeglasses. I was thrilled with the idea and opted for it and the expensive(Rs 79,000 per eye package) package. He did not mention any side effects, problems or risks at that time except that I might need a computer glasses since I use computer 4-5 hours in a day. This was ok with me.

Surgeries were performed flawlessly and with good and generally friendly doctor and his staff. Post surgery I noted that

i) during night I was facing the problem of halogen effect during driving or even sitting in front seat of the car looking at passing car headlights, traffic signal lights and even tail lights of the cars.

ii) my focus for near sight, medium sight and far sight was quickly changing causing blurriness and difficulty in reading documents, newspapers and words on computer screen. There was no major problem per-say with the far sight.

iii) my eyes were getting tired very quickly when reading and doing computer work and there was constant puffiness developed below my eyes,

iv) appointments during follow-up visits became extremely painful in that called to see the doctor at 3 PM, I was ushered in only at 5 PM while all others coming after me were being ushered in bypassing me. Protests with the receptionists, staff and doctors did not make any change. Soon it became clear, new patients(Murgas) with potential business got preference, for obvious reasons.

During the first follow-up and upon my complaints I was given a pep talk and number(+0.75 Sph each on RE and LE) to use for computer. This did not help at all and as a matter made matter worse.

During final follow-up after 5 weeks of surgery with no improvement at all and upon my complaint, I was bluntly told the blatant lie that these problems were explained to me pre surgery and it was there in my documents. I was then showed the undertaking I had signed just before surgery that included some of these problems in small prints. The point remains that such undertakings are quickly taken by staff without giving much time to you to read lengthy 2 page documents with small prints and above all without giving you a copy of that document. Very convenient way of protecting them.

Dr Anand rudely told me " what you want me to do? Remove the multifocal lens and put monofocal lens(of-course at his cost)?", Upon my saying "Yes" since I was worse off than before and feeling cheated having spent nearly Rs 2 lakhs on my eye surgery, he quickly and as an added thought said " but this will be risky since your retina having thin layer could get damaged and cause more problem,. I replied that I will revert after a month or so if it did not improve. In the meantime he wrote new prescriptions for glasses(RE+0.75 Sph, -0.50 Cyl, 110d Axis, Add+1.00: LE+0.75 Sph, -0.50 Cyl, 90d Axis, Add+1.00). Also use High intensity yellow glasses for night driving. Sadly this also did not help. In the process I spent additional Rs. 4000 on two types of lenses and web search indicated that yellow glasses do not help and are more harmful to the eyes in the long run.

A second opinion also confirmed that any change now wis Risky.

So, here I am with my good eyes and vision that could last me another 5 yrs with my old progressive lenses and having spent over Rs 2 lakhs I am worse off. I fully badly cheated and totally disappointed with the name of erstwhile Dr Ashok Shroff being my preferred doctor.(Additionally, I did not choose a prominent Hiranandani hospital next to my home and traveled 30 kms each time in heavy traffic of Mumbai and at additional cost.
