A different take. Review on Shah Rukh Khan

One of the biggest icons of Bollywood, he has occupied the mind of the cine-goer for more than a Decade now. I too am an avid fan of his. Here I will devote much of my attention (and Ur time) to things other than what we usually hear and feel.

Acting prowess-

He is one of the most talented actors to have ever graced the 70mm. His repertoire is as wide as Amazon and as long as the Nile. Performances like Baazigar, Devdas and Kal Ho Na Ho, blockbusters like Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Haietc., a bunch of Filmfares and comparisons with industry legends stand testimony to this. This guy exudes a certain charisma and presence that U just can not avoid. I do not need to go in detail here. We all know what a class act he is.

A minor issue-

I feel, of late, he has changed little in his emotion display. There is something about him that U just can't forget 'Shah Rukh Khan' when watching him. This, I feel, has partially led to the comparative failure of films like Ashoka where he had to shed his image and enact the character with utmost originality. He succeeded in this in Devdas. In films like Chalte Chalte and Main Hoo Nahe definitely has tried but breaking the cocoon has been hard. Though I think this is much minor an issue and won't take long to be addressed.

A Personal Opinion-

I feel an actor of his repute should be doing other kinds of cinema - better cinema. No I am not talking of social issues. What I am referring to is- more serious and substantial stuff. He minces no words when he expresses his want for money and fame. Hence out-and-out commercial movies. I used to be a die-hard fan of his earlier but now my faith is quavering only because of this money-wanting, all-gloss image that is beginning to form in my mind.

This is precisely why I hold actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri and Shabana Azmi higher than him. Not that I dislike his good looks. Not at all. Its just that its all too shiny and plasticky for me. No 'good' movies is not the best criteria for judging an actor but doesn't it contribute ? I can't think of any movie of his, other than Devdas (which I feel is his best performance to date), that I will remember 30 years from now.

I have absolutely no bitter feelings - I reiterate. I am writing so because I want to see a better SRK. As someone who thinks a touch higher, who uses his skills in a better fashion. I know most of U will strongly disagree with me but I want to tell U that I want him to be my favorite once again. I like him too much to see movies like Main Hoon Naa.

Off the reel

He makes efforts to spend quality time with his family and he stays away from controversies. In an interview, he was asked which books he is currently reading. He replied -''Quran. I want to know why some people are doing what they are (referring to terrorism), in the name of the religion. I want to see it for myself if the book allows such extremism.''

That gives a rare insight as to how as a human he is. How good?.... Think yourself.
