Secret Superstar is an endearing, emotional film which focuses on Human Relations & aspirations. The mother-daughter relationship in an orthodox family has been explored maturely. It does touch upon key women centric issues viz. female feticide, domestic violence, empowerment etc.

Further, the impact & outreach of social media(with a pinch of cinematic liberty, though) which enables young ‘closet’ talents to get noticed, has also been highlighted quite well. It cannot be termed exactly as an ‘inspirational’ story, since honing of talent(from raw to polished levels), the journey towards achieving excellence requires consistency. This is a bigger challenge these days of cut throat competition also needs equal attention.

Nevertheless, debutante director Advait Chandan understands & knows his craft well. He keeps the narrative engaging throughout, so you remain fully involved in the film. However, somewhere towards the end, things seem to happen too fast. The climax fortunately is very subtle, which sums it up sweetly.

Music is the soul of the film. Amit Trivedi(tunes), Kausar Munir(lyrics) and Meghna Mishra(voice of Zaira) present us with uncut gemstones, indeed. After a long time in Hindi cinema, you come out humming the songs of a film.

Performance wise, Zaira Wasim as Insia Sheikh is just outstanding. While she pleasantly surprised us with her raw intensity in Dangal, in Secret Superstar she improves it levels up. Every expression, every dialogue, every movement speaks volumes of her talent. Zaira is by & large one of the best actresses we have today. She is sure to get bigger & better opportunities to showcase her untapped potential as well.

Aamir Khan as Shakti Kumar is hilarious. His over-the-top antics provide comic relief as well as opportunity for other actors esp. Zaira to perform. Meher Vij does a fabulous job in portrayed the troubled mother – housewife. Kabir Sajid is cute. Tirth Sharma(as Chintan Parikh, Zaira’s classmate) is fantastic.

Overall, Secret Superstar is must watch, feel good family entertainer.
