Everyone who has seen Sarkar will agree to the fact that it’s a movie which comes once in a lifetime. Wonderful direction, brilliant performances and most importantly, excellent climax and lots of such other factors made Sarkar truly remarkable and unforgettable. And therefore one would expect Sarkar Raj, Sarkar’s sequel to be much better. But unfortunately, Sarkar Raj is surely going to disappoint a lot of viewers who will be going for it with skyhigh expectations.

The story of the movie: The movie begins two years later from where Sarkar ended. Subhash Nagre (Amitabh Bachchan) is still the Sarkar and his son Shankar (Abhishek Bachchan) also works with him. In fact, much of his work is handled by Shankar. He is happily married to Avantika (Tanishaa). Anita (Aishwariya Rai), CEO of Sheppard Power Plant visits Sarkar and brings a proposal of setting up a power plant in a rural area of Maharashtra called Thakarvadi. At first Subhash didn’t quite like the idea as Thakarwadi was a home to 40000 people but far-sighted Shankar was in favour of the plan as it would solve Maharashtra’s electricity problems. Soon, Subhash also agreed to the idea. But whenever somebody is planning development, there would be a certain section of people who would be opposing it. And that’s what happens with the Nagres. To find out whether the power plant plan becomes successful or no, watch the film.

Sarkar Raj scores mainly in the first half. The introduction of news characters, the problems arising-everything was done in good old true Ramu style! In fact, there’s not a single moment in first half which is boring or uninteresting. Even the culmination of the first half was powerful.

However, the movie takes a bad turn in the second half. Agreed that the sequences in the second half were shocking but they were completely unacceptable. The climax was powerful too but the impact made by the prequel Sarkar was much more while Sarkar Raj hardly makes any impact.

One cool thing about Sarkar Raj is the villains in the movie are too smart and funny and had their own style! All the baddies-Govind Namdeo, Sayaji Shinde, Upendra Limaye and Rajesh Shringapure stand out because of the coolness of their characters!

Performance-wise, each actor leaves a mark. The best among them is without a shred of doubt Abhishek Bachchan! If Sarkar belonged to Amitabh Bachchan and its climax was dominated by Abhishek, here it’s the opposite-this movie belongs to Abhishek and the climax is dominated by Amitabh! Abhishek does exceptionally well in some scenes. Time and again, he has proved that he is one of the best and his performance in Sarkar Raj very well proves it!

Amitabh Bachchan’s role can be termed as a ‘supporting role’ since the movie belongs to Abhishek. But though, he does a great job. And as I said he dominated the climax in which he gave a powerful performance! Another notworthy performance from a brilliant actor!

Aishwariya Rai is the surprise of the movie! She looks great in formal dresses and she gives a brilliant performance. Watch out for her expressions and performance in the last 25 minutes. Aishwariya Rai has proved her capability by giving mind-blowing performances in the recent past. Her performance in Sarkar Raj is another feather in her cap! Way to go, Ash!

Rajesh Shringapure as Sanjay Somji was terrific. He shines, especially in his first two scenes! Though his look is similar to that of Raj Thackeray, it doesn’t seem that comparison will arise between the two because of the nature of Somji’s character.

Govind Namdeo as Hassan Qazi was quite funny and did a great job! Sayaji Shinde also did a great job but he gets overshadowed due to the presence of so many characters. Upendra Limaye as Kantilal Vora does a great job, especially in two scenes (his entry scene and the party scene). Victor Banerjee was okay. Dilip Prabhawalkar as Rao Sahab was terrific. It was difficult to identify him and viewers will come to know that he is Dilip Prabhawalkar only by his voice!

Tanisha does a great job. She is a talented actress but sadly isn’t getting many roles. Supriya Pathak didn’t have anything to do in the movie. Ravi Kale as Chandar (Sarkar’s right hand man) does a great job like he did in Sarkar. Others were alright.

Bapi-Tutul’s music was good only in one song ‘Jalwa Re Jalwa’. Amar Mohile’s background score was brilliant, especially the ‘Govinda’ track! Amit Roy’s cinematography was very unusual but helped the movie to give a raw look. In fact, his cinematography was better than in Sarkar. Allan Amin’s action was as usual fantastic!

Dialogues were quite sharp. However, the best dialogue in the movie is “Mantralaya mein badaro ne utpaat machaaya!!”

Prashant Pandey’s story was primarily good but he falters in the later part of the story.

Ram Gopal Verma’s direction was great no doubt but it won’t be wrong to say that he lost a golden chance. Post-Aag, he had suffered severe criticism. With Sarkar Raj, he could have redeemed his lost prestige and respect, but sadly that won’t happen. And the only reason for it is the unacceptable happenings in the second half (I would not like to reveal it). Because of it, the film hardly makes any impact. Kya yaar Ramu!

Some of the best scenes of the movie:

1.    The first scene of the movie

2.    Ash’s entry

3.    Nagres visiting Thakarvadi

4.    Somji infuriating people against Shankar Nagre (wonderful!)

5.    The intermission point

6.    Shankar and Chandar rescuing Somji

7.    The hospital scene

8.    Subhash revealing the name of the real villain to Anita (shocking!)

9.    The last scene

On the whole, Sarkar Raj is a good product but unfortunately, it is disappointing too because of its 2nd half. It would surely disappoint those who loved Sarkar a lot and who’ll be for it with high expectations.
