I remember visiting Sapna book House as kid with my parents that was almost like 15 years ago. I fact I still have few books that I bought as a kid from this store, for that time this was one of the best bookstores in Bangalore.
Time have passed, things have changed but this shop has not just tried to remain the same but it has gone downhill. Book is just a small business products in their shop. I don’t think they even take books more seriously anymore. There are chocolates, gift items, stationery’s, soft toys, bla bla too much in their store now and most of the places are occupied by them than books.
Again, when it comes to books, the collection is very very limited. You do not get an option to browse. The bookingkeeping followed in this store is really poor. It’s very difficult to browse the books. Not that they have too many books, the once they have is just laid out plain in the big platform.
They do not offer discounts on books, now tell me why will I go here and buy books when the same I can buy it at a fraction of the price online. I am not a big fan of buying books online, sometimes I just want to buy that book and start reading and do not have patience to wait for 2-3 days for the online guys to deliver.
All I’m saying is, books are special and they are valued. You have to create an atmosphere to buy books for your Customer if you call yourself a book House. Your place just sent have that’s vibe and that makes it difficult. I know it is a challenging day period for the physical book store now, but just on the other side of the spectrum, there are book stores in Bangalore who are doing exceptionally good and have so many loyal customers, I think that is only because their core business is books and they respect that.
