Samsung N 500

I have been thinking about trying out a new brand of mobile phone for some time. Me not being the type who considered it hip to be wasting money on style statements have been stopping me from making that so much desired to trip to the mobile shop.

Finally, I decided, its time for my trustworthy Nokia to retire and walked straight in to a Samsung showroom. I must say I was impressed by the sleep silver handsets displayed all over the showroom. Beautiful! That’s what I thought at the first look at my phone. A cute little one clad in silver, Samsung N-500.

As every one does, my next concern was the features. Sales man there did a pretty good job of convincing me with the phone. It comes with a 200 names strong Phone Book, A host of voice dialing and voice activated commands. I must say the most comprehensive on voice systems in mobile phones.

The feature I really liked is Answer phone. You can record a message in your mobile and let the phone pick your calls and take a message when you are busy. Being a mostly busy type, it really helps me. It does make my callers whine a little, but all do agree that being able to leave a message is better than not speaking at all. So it works!

Another thing is, it has a pretty useful scheduler in the menu. Though not as great as Nokia, it’s pretty thoughtful and gives you a calendar of the whole month with highlighted dates for those with events scheduled on. When you have an N-500, you don’t have to worry about setting your alarm every day. It has a thoughtful daily alarm feature which keeps ringing every day at a set time.

The service light is very useful most of the time. It keeps blinking as long as the network is on and stops when you step out of range. I shall say, it works best as an excellent guide for finding your phone in dark :D. And the colors are customizable.

On an idle screen you have a choice of keeping it normal, with a screensaver or with a Clock, Date & Day display. This really comes in handy as a desk clock on my work desk. I hardly look at anything else for date or time when I have my phone in its cute mobile chair.

Unlike Nokia, the accessories are a bit hard to find as Samsung is not as popular. You can’t buy it cheap either because the market is not flooded with Samsung accessories. The Standby is pretty OK. I can’t say great, still it will do. It gives you around 1.5 to 2 hours of talk time. So, for those who are born with mobile stuck on the ear, I would suggest an additional battery pack or daily recharging. In most cases, later shall do. Charging takes exactly 120 minutes to complete.

The hands-free option is not too great on Samsung. The phone ring is not delivered on the earphone. So, its very easy to miss it with one of your ears closed in a noisy place. Besides, it could have been a bit sleeker.

Over all, I can vote yes for this little beauty. You wont be disappointed.
