Indian cinema is really coming out of age.

And this year is witnessing an emergence of fresh and creative ideas, better packaging, aggressive marketing and yes.. better entertainment.

Gone are the days when corrupt politician would rape hero’s sister and kill his father in first half and then hero would took the revenge in second half.

Now we have, what they say.. “feel good movies”. These movies will make you smile, make you sing, make you cry but when you leave the theater or should I say multiplex, you feel good.

Here is the latest offering from the same genre.. ‘Salaam Namaste’.

They say movies are the reflection of our society. In 80’s our hero would fight for the mill workers and our heroines would die for their ‘Suhaag’.

Things have changed now.

Meet Nick (Saif ali khan) who is a chef in an Indian restaurant and ‘Ambar’ (Preity zinta) who is a radio jockey for the station ‘Salaam Namaste’.

They love each other but not sure about the future. Not sure if they would get married. Not sure if they would have kids. And by the time they make their mind, they decide to live together.

Is this a reflection of our society ? May be yes.

May be yes, because you can easily identify with Nick and Ambar, their life style, their occupation and their attitude towards life.

They both meet and instantly fall in love with each other. They are aware that they don’t know enough about each other and don’t have the time for it considering the nature of the profession they are into. So, they decide to stay together.

They start to understand the differences and try to adjust with them. They want all the fun minus responsibilities. If any one of them wants to quit, he or she is free to go.

Sounds interesting? Not really.

Circumstances force them to face the responsibilities and then comes the twist. Now the question is, how you want to proceed.. On your own terms or with your life partner.

I don’t want to reveal the whole plot so you better watch by yourself.

Salaam Namaste comes as a refreshing change from routine love stories. It does have all the ingredient of a masala film but it tastes different.

Saif and preity look cool in their trendy outfits. And the on screen chemistry between these two actors adds more depth to the characters they have played.

Locals of Melbourne are breathtaking, and are captured very well.

Music is already topping the charts. The film could have easily do away with the song “whats going on..”. One slow number needs little trimming. You feel like humming “My dil goes Mmm..” even after the show concludes.

I was not convinced with the authorities when Saif got the national award beating Shahrukh for Swades and Amitabh for Khaki. But you just can’t ignore his blistering talent. After hum-tum and parineeta he is on hatric with Salaam Namaste. He is completely in form.

I’m not a very big fan of priety zinta. But liked her in this film after ‘Kal ho na ho’. She is charming and energetic.

These two look awesome together.

Full marks to the script and direction. The man behind the lenses deserves a special mention. Thumbs up for the music and packaging.

Arshad warsi, Javed Jafri and Jugal hunsraj (remember this masoom actor?) are likeable and did justice to their roles.

Lets come to the final verdict.

Salaam | Namaste is nicely made movie. Though it strongly appeals to the youth, it can be watched by other age groups also. It guaranties light humor, emotional moments (not like viranee pariwar) and good entertainment.

So if you are frustrated with Mangal’s halla bol act and can’t figure out why people laugh in NO ENTRY zone.. and if you haven’t watched a movie with your girlfriend after “My wife’s murder”, get the tickets of Salaam | Namaste.

It entertains.

My verdict: 1/2
