Saaheb is one of my favourites, it has been almost 7 to 8 years since I have seen it but it still reminisces in my mind. A big hit in the 80's also with a hit song called 'Yaar Bina Chain Kahan Re' the first song to feature break dance.

It is the story of old middle class father Badri Sharma(Utpal Dutt) who has four sons, and two daughters of which Saaheb(Anil Kapoor) the youngest son and Gultie youngest daughter are unmarried . Saaheb is a happy go lucky boy. His only passion is Football and plays as a goalkeeper. He does petty shopping jobs for his bhabhi's in return is taunted for not being in job and living on their husbands mercy. His father too considers him as a good for nothing. He tells Saaheb ,'Saare ladke ball ko goal mein daalne ke liye bhaagte hain aur yeh goal par khada rehkar hawa khata hain'. However his eldest bhabhi Sujata (Raakhi) understands Saaheb and his life. She is not just a mother figure to him but also a very good friend to him. In this mundane life of Saaheb enters Natasha (Amrita Singh) . She is lively and childish and likes Saaheb . They are happy in their world until reality strikes Saaheb. A suitor is found for Saaheb's youngest sister Gultie ,but the family must arrange for 50,000 rupees for her marriage. The father requests his son's for help for the marriage. The sons offer near to nothing however the sons and their quickly get their acts together to take advantage of their fathers helpless situation. The second sons wife longed for a her own house so her husband suggest his father to sell the house some money could be used or the wedding while remaining could be used in buying smaller houses. Third son suggest keeping house on mortagage to his father in law which he knew old man could never return back and they would be able to gobble the property . The poor father comes across a News Paper advertisement which calls for people to donate kidney for the a rich business mans son. He calls up the business man to donate his own kidney ,its really sad to see an old man selling his part of body when he has three healthy earning sons back home ,but to his dismay they need a young donor. Saaheb realizes what his father is upto and decides of selling his own kidney though his girlfriend offers her jewellery to him for help which he refuses. His doctor (A. K .Hangal ) who knowing Saaheb is good player warns him that he will have to sacrifice football but for Saahebs thinks only of his fathers disillusionment and his sisters feeling of misery . Saaheb just takes for 50,000 exact sum required for wedding and a secured job in the rich mans company. When Saaheb gives the money to his father he starts hurling at Saaheb assuming he stole it But Saaheb convinces him that he got the money from their sister Shanti married in Pune. Prepartiond begin ,but Saaheb has to get operated on the same day of the wedding ,he tells the family he is going for a football tournament out of state . Before leaving he touches the feet of his Bhabhi (he thought may be that could be his last meeting with her this scenes is very touch too) On his operation bed Saaheb smiles imagining his little sister as a bride while none in his family except his bhabhi and sister are missing him. Then the family comes to know the half truth about the money when the sister from Pune arrives after the wedding who informs them she never gave the money ,the father sulks at believing his thief son and all the brothers are up in arms calling the boy bad names . Sujata gets to know thr truth and informs the family about it. Everyone is ashamed esp the father. When he visits the hospital ,he tells Sujata I want to touch Saaheb's feet ,You can feel the old mans pain at that moment. There is also a scene in which he tells , "Mein kehta tha ,'Saare ladke ball ko goal mein daalne ke liye bhaagte hain aur yeh goal par khada rehkar hawa khata hain'. mein galat tha ' Saaheb ne sabse hamare liye sabsa bada goal save kiya hain' (pardon me I don't remember the words exactly)' The films end with Saaheb living happily with Natasha with a descent job. The actors of this movie should be full marks, making all characters real to life. Utpal Dutt at his fantabulous best so convincing in that role and same for Anil Kapoor, for me it is one of his best performance. This movie has so many facets to it. The different shades of humans emotions and relationships are so beautifully expressed in it without having to make it look like a soap opera saga or a Yash Chopra over spilling non required emotional rivers in or Sooraj Barjatiyas over the top family extravaganzas. This was the first movie during which I ever cried My review is dedicated to every common Indian who faces such issues in their life.
