A true story involving adultery, murder and trial influenced by people and media.

The script inspired by an unfortunate incident in the life of Naval Officer K. M. Nanavati followed by a court case, is dramatically executed to deliver 2hours 45 minutes of emotional entertainment.

The movie provides nostalgic moments of the city once upon a time named ‘Bombay’ giving you a glimpse of the less populated city during 50’s….Naval Dockyard, Drive-In Cinema, vintage cars, dressing style and the like.

Story: Rustom Pavri(Akshay Kumar), a highly decorated commander in the Indian Navy is returning to land well before his designated date, hence is excited to surprise his beloved wife.  A counter surprise awaits him when he finds his wife Cynthia(Ileana D’Cruz) not at home but instead finds bouquets, gift items, love letters.

And as the truth unfolds, the next day goes to her lover Vikram’s(Arjan Bajwa) residence, shoots him dead and surrenders to the police. A Parsi killing a well-renowned elite Sindhi has the two communities at loggerheads. While the Sindhi’s hire a reputed lawyer, the Parsi’s do their bit.  There is an interesting twist added to the script where Rustom is shown in possession of some ‘classified secret documents’ that the Navy Officers are after. Rustom’s trial receives huge media coverage and generates sympathy which influences the judgement in the end.

Cast: Akshay Kumar aptly suited the role of Naval Commander and his exemplary character(Rustom) would remind you of his role in Dhadkan.  Ileana looked glamorous and her beauty added great value to the onscreen drama. Esha Gupta too looked gorgeous in her negative role as Vikram’s sister. Arjan Bajwa was brilliant as an elite Casanova. Kumud Mishra’s character provided you bit of humor.  Pavan Malhotra was effective as the Cop.

Pros: Direction, Casting, Script, Songs, effective use of VFX, Court proceedings

Cons: There have been films with similar storyline in the past and hence another one does not generate much interest.  In spite of adding suspense to the script by way of ‘secret classified documents’, it engages the viewer but fails to impress.

Songs: The music and lyrics were great and suited the visuals especially ‘Tere Sang Yaara’ and ‘Rustom Vahi’ were impacting.

Conclusion:  The film is exemplary for couples and those in relationships. Rustom does not provide you wholesome entertainment but is passable as a well-made film. The characters of Akshay and Ileana will definitely stir up the spirit within you to make you believe you were right there beside them. The couple willing to accept each other in spite of  adulterous past without blaming each other provides you great insight in wisdom, matured thinking and forgiving attitude that only comes from above.
