Finally, finally finally, Taylor Lautner of the Twilight fame is trying desperately to shed his chocolate boy image and wants to get into some serious stuff. His latest movie Run The Tide tries to portray just that. While Taylor works hard to bring forward a new version of his acting, the script and the limited acting skills let us all down.
Rey( Taylor) is your average guys who works in a gas station-cum-convenience store owned by his stepdad Bo( Kenny Johnson). He has a little brother Oliver( Nicos Christou) and Rey is committed towards offering a better life to his younger brother. In the meantime, the boys' mother Lola( Constance Zimmer) is about to be released from prison after six years after serving for drug charges. Upon her releases, she decides to assume the custody of Oliver. Knowing her troubled past, Rey does not want Oliver to live with their mother and a coincidental meeting with his high-school crush( played by Johanna Braddy), Rey decides to move to California with his brother under the pretext of going on a long road-trip to see the ocean. Lola and Bo get a hang of Rey's idea and decide to pursue both the boys. This cat-and-mouse game between Ray and his parents is literally the major theme of the narrative.
Rajiv Shah’s screenplay is interesting, however, the characters are shallow. Almost all the characters sound superficial and the direction of Soham Mehta disappoints big time. The move is filled with cliched scenes and the entire narrative sounds false at best. As far as acting is concerned, Taylor Lautner just does not have that range of emotions to pull off such a complicated character. The melodramatic moments in the movie look forced than authentic. Only Constance Zimmer manages to portray a convincing performance.
The direction and the screenplay of the movie are disappointing. Adding to that, the background score does not really accentuate the feel of the movie. Overall, a pretty average movie with somewhat forced performances.
