You Did It, You Did It. Review on Rex Harrison

Caesar in Cleopatra, Dr Doolittle in Doctor Doolittle, Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady, Pope Julius II in The Agony and The Ecstasy, Captain Daniel Gregg in The Ghost and Mrs Muirand a list of other great movies where Rex Harrison performed lead roles are almost unforgettable and he still remains our beloved Professor (Higgins), a role for which he won the Academy Award.

Rex Harrison. (Sir Reginald Carey Harrison) aspired to be an actor from his childhood. He began with light comedies in the beginning and was soon known as greatest comedian of the stage - but his comedy would often drift into dark humour leaving him the master of the screen - and later his unique style, which remains unconquered. He played almost all leading characters of Shaw's plays, it can be said either Shaw's temper suited him, or he suited Shaw's heroic idealism. He was called a misogynist, a character he so often portrayed even in the films especially in his earlier films like Unfaithfuly Yours, and even in The Constant Husband. Roles like Caeser in Cleopatra won him the greatest accolade - He was nominated for Academy Award . In the words of Mr Crowther ''Caesar is no fustian tyrant,'' the critic wrote, ''Played stunningly by Rex Harrison, he is a statesman of manifest wisdom, shrewdness and magnanimity. And he is also a fascinating study in political ambiguities. Mr. Harrison's faceted performance is the best in the film.'' (https://reelclassics.com/Actors/Rex/rex-article.htm). He was often called ''The Incomparable Rex''. His Role as Professor Higgins in My Fair Lady is too famous for me to recount anything here. In Doctor Doolittle, he plays a veterinarian who talks to animals - (a very memorable performance and my favourite too) and so it goes on .

As regards his personal life, theres nothing extraordinary except his six marriages of which five were failure. This earned him the nickname Sexy Rexy. He was said to be blind in one eye due to childhood illness (Imagine his achievement) and most of the times he was as he was on the screen. He won the Knighthood , which he much longed for. This was said to be unusual, for Knighthoods are not bestowed on people who had lived abroad or married more than once.Rex Harrison was also well known for his voice - which was unmistakably British accented, of course having born in England. (Watch the movie My Fair Lady, You will know what I am talking about.). He also wrote an autobiography ''Rex'' and book on Art of Comedy.

Rex Harrison died on 2 of June 1990 (born : May 5 1908).

Rex Harrison has been my all time favourite - recently I saw his movie Unfaithfully Yours (a movie which is not in my collection) and I thought why not I write about him in Mouthshut ( to my surprise, I had to request it as a new product). Some of his performances which are my favourite are his roles as Prof Higgins, Pope Julius and Doctor Doolittle.
