If ever there was a way to plunge you to the depths of tragedy while simultaneously uplifting your soul with hope, this had to be it.

Confused?

So was I. After watching this awesome movie, I did not know if I was sad by the tragic turn of events or genuinely happy for living a life consumed by no addiction greater than that of cinema and music.

Director Darren Aronofsky with his slick editing and psychedelic camerawork weaves a parable for the times that we live in. A story about 4 addicts and their process of addiction and final catharsis.

There is the TV junkie Ellen Burstyn who diets with the help of addictive drugs just so that she can fit into her pretty red dress and make it on national TV.

There is her son Jared Leto who is an addict proper who dreams of becoming a dealer just so that he can keep his mother and girl friend happy and prove his worth.

There is Leto's comrade in arms Marlon Wayans (known more for his choice of body humour in college flicks, but surprisingly does a terrific job here) who wants his place under the sun and nothing more.

Then finally there is Jennifer Connelly (Pre-A Beautiful mind and Pre-Dark water) who is looking to break free and establish as a designer without her father's help/influence.

And then there is the story of spiralling addiction driven by different reasons and priorities as the 4 protagonists plunge deeper and deeper.

I cannot and will not discuss the movie any further.

I believe they should give Ellen Burstyn an Oscar every year for this performance until something better comes along! Jared Leto is a highly underrated actor. Exceptional talent, only wish he had more quality work coming his way. Connelly is totally lovely in this movie and I was smitten by her.

Another lovely aspect of the movie was the haunting score by Clint Mansell, I nearly cried when the end credits rolled (and I try to be the toughest guy at all times!)

Go see this and feel transformed.

Another question...Why am I only the 4th person to review this movie?!
