Hello friends, I hope you would have liked the rummage I did on my recent reviews i.e ‘jhanak jhanak payal baaje’ and ‘ lamhe’, and after talking about these two evergreens, what could be the next.
When we’re talking about the classics then how can we forget the SHOWMAN OF THE MILLENIUM- RAJ KAPOOR. And here I’m with one of his best movies as a director. ‘RAM TERI GANGA MAILI’. It’s said to be a ballad. It presents the metaphor between holy GANGA and a lady. Just as GANGA lets all the dirt to be drained into it and even then its purity doesn’t decline; the same way a lady takes all the dirt of the society and whatever it may be she remains unclouded.

Released in the year 1985, this movie is a hallmark in INDIAN CINEMA. The whole movie is like a love sonnet. RAJEEV goes to GANGOTRI to get the holy water of river GANGA wherein he meets Mandakini and cupid plays his part here. But destiny has something else for him in the sac; when he comes back to his native, he finds that he has already been engaged to some other girl. He tries to protest but father is adamant. GANGA is pregnant and gives birth to a kid. And later when she don’t get any information about her love, she moves to KOLKATA. Where, she falls victim to the naked social realities, and finally lands in a “KOTHA”. But now, is she really serene and pure, will she be accepted by the society and her lover, is the question? And if she is accepted then what will happen to the other girl, and if she’s not then what she gonna do, where she gonna leave the child that has born in the mean time. To know the answer of all these questions just watch the movie!
WHAT CRITICS HAS TO SAY: -
# The movie is simply beautiful and the newcomer MANDAKINI, starts with the best performance, her innocence works and she really looks ‘PAHADI’.
# Songs are the heart and soul of the movie, RAVINDRA JAIN at his peak.
# The movie simply belongs to RAJ JI, for his taut direction and lovely style of story telling.
# The locales at GANGOTRI, leaves you out of breath.
# People get gaga at the magnum opus, movie that creates hoopla in the award functions.
# No one else could have emoted to the songs so beautifully as LATAJI.
SOME FACTS ABOUT THE MOVIE: -
• Actually the “BOBBY” girl was auditioned for the part of GANGA which finally fell into the hands of MANDAKINI.
• It was a tough time for the whole unit as the weather of GANGOTRI was not only chilling but many a times the unit members started bleeding or nearly froze to death.
• The ending as suggested by the writer was that GANGA will have to die in the end, but the whole unit turned against it, then RAJ JI suggested that let the other girl die, but again there were many who objected. The ending was a great problem.
• It turned to be the biggest money grosser of the year.
WHAT DO I HAVE TO SAY: -
The tragedies with GANGA are really touching, and a satire on the whole society. The whim of the elders has been beautifully picturized. But what touches the most, is the purity of love, and RAJ KAPOOR’S dominance over it. Most of the frames are simply awesome, and the vision of the director is been passed successfully.
MANDAKINI: -
She’s the central character around whom the whole story revolves. Right lady for this role, with her eyes speaking and innocence leaves everyone gaga. Her acting is really promising. Her dialogue – ‘ Baba, aaj se kisi ko beti keh kar yahan mat lana, nahin to logo ka andhon se vishwas uth jayega’, brings tears in the eyes of the people.
RAJEEV KAPOR: -
I think he never acted again, though he got many movies, RAM….. is the only movie where his acting was appreciated. And why not?? He presented the part of a helpless chap marvelously.
MUSIC: -
Best, ever given by NARENDRA JAIN. Though his music and voice in RAMAYAN is immortal but it’s this movie that really established him in the tinsel town.
LYRICS: -
Again, the lyrics by RAVINDRA and HASRAT are touching and beautifully emoted by LATAJI. Though all the songs stand out but HASRAT’S ‘SUN SAHIBA SUN’ is the best. The title song is really touching, ‘AAJE RE’ leaves you haunted with nostalgic memories. ‘EK RADHA EK MEERA’ is the simple but beautiful comparison between the love of RADHA and MEERA for LORD KRISHNA that is again unified with the love of the two ladies with RAJEEV KAPOOR. ‘HUSN PAHARON KA’ reminds you of the ethereal beauty of the hillside.
IN ONE LINE: -
Sensuous story of love never told before.
WHY TO WATCH: -
If want to see what real cinematography and visualization is then it’s a must watch.
WHY NOT TO WATCH: -
If looking out for some extra hot shots, sex and action.
