During the year,2003,there was a craze of horror films,in Bollywood.In 2004,there has been no supernatural thriller,except for ''Rudraksh'',''Krishna Cottage'' and now ''Rakht''.''Rakht'',is the latest offering from Bollywood,which is director Mahesh Manjrekar`s,biggest project.The film brings back the flop team behind the film ''Khel'',but this time the producers,Suniel Shetty and Popcorn Motion are expecting their latest film to be a better film.Whether this film is a winner or a loser,this is for the audiences to decide,but my thoughts on this film are the following....
THE FILM:
Popcorn Motion Pictures and Dr.Vijay Mallya`s. ''Rakht'',directed by Mahesh.V.Manjrekar,stars Bipasha Basu,Sanjay Dutt,Suniel Shetty,Dino Morea,Abhishek Bachchan,Himanshu Malik,Payal Rohatgi,Amrita Arora,Neha Dhupia,Rajat Bedi and Yana Gupta.This film has everything from a huge star cast to item numbers.From thrills to chills and from Bipasha to Neha Dhupia.All in all,this film has every such ingredients,which would attract the audiences.Let`s see how the film has finally,shaped up.
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Drishti(Bipasha Basu):Drishti is a clairvoyant and a fortune-teller who gets visions through which she can sense what the future has in store for everyone.She is the main character of the film and how she helps the people she knows,through her ability of knowing the future in advance,is all what her character is about.Bipasha Basu is playing the protagonist of a film after a long time.We saw her playing the central character,for the last time in ''Jism''.
In this film,she has got to do a very different role from what she has done in the past and surprisingly,she ends up giving a good performance.Though,you will definitely feel that a more established and experienced actress could have done this role better,but still you wont feel as if Bipasha is a miscast.She has given a good performance,for which she definitely deserves a pat on her back.
2.Rahul(Sanjay Dutt):Rahul is a school principal,who is in love with Natassha but he is facing problems in his life,as Natasha has suddenly disappeared,from his life.He takes help from Drishti to know where Natasha is.Sanjay Dutt looks a bit old and tired but he still manages to perform well.Don`t expect a ''Munnabhai M.B.B.S'',act from him this time,as his role is very different from those kind of roles.He plays a side character,in this film,so don`t even expect any hero kind of an act from him.In his respective role,he has done a fine job.
3.Mohit(Suniel Shetty):Mohit is a mentally sick person,who has been physically abused and tortured by his step father,at a very young age.Suniel Shetty,is just about okay in this film,because his chatracter is too loud,and at times,irritating,too.He plays a different role,this time,but doesn`t act so differently.He doesn`t put in an extra-ordinary performance.
4.Sunny(Dino Morea):Sunny,is another hot-tempered guy,who constantly abuses his own wife,and doesn`t treat her like a human being.Dino Morea,impresses you through his performance,in this film.Though,he is not the hero of the film,but he still carries off his role very well.He is definitely improving after every other film.
Amrita Arora,plays Natassha,who does the dare bare act,in the film.She suffers heavily,due to her poor characterisation.Neha Dhupia,gets no scope to perform and so,she also fails to impress.Payal Rohatgi,as Tanya surprisingly acts reasonably well.Abhishek Bachchan,as Manav,is the item-boy in this film.He has just one song and a scene to his credit,in this film.Himanshu Mallik and Rajat Bedi are passable as the supporting actors.Yana Gupta sizzles and rocks in her item number.
THE STORY:
Drishti,is a widow lady and a mother to a young child.She has got one gift from god,which no other ordinary person has and that is-she can predict the future.She can see the future of every person who is associated with her.She is a very lonely person,who has only two friends,Tanya and Mohit.The former is a single mom,just like her and the latter is a mentally sick person who was physically abused by his step-father.She can help many people through her ability of predicting future.Rahul,is the school principal where Drishti`s son studies.He has a fiancee,Natasha,whom Drishti finds out,is not loyal to Rahul.Rhea,is a client of Drishti,who comes to discuss her married life problems with Drishti.Rhea`s husband,Sunny treats her very badly and gets abusive and wild as a beast.
It`s upto Drishti,to predict what will happen with Rhea in the future,and which advice will be the best for her.Then suddenly,some strange things start to happen.These mysterious cases of Rahul,Natasha,Sunny and Rhea,slowly and slowly start becoming more and more horrible.Natasha suddenly disappears and now Rahul wants Drishti to find out where Natassha is.Another strange thing happens.A girl is killed.Who is that girl?Who is the murderer?What is happening?What will happen?What has the future in store for all of them?WHAT IF YOU KNOW THE FUTURE?
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Mahesh.V.Manjrekar does a fairly good job.There are some interesting moments in this film.First of all,there is a haunting touch and feeling in this movie,which you can feel and that is what is very important for a film such as this one.Here,the director deserves full marks.Drishti`s interactions with every client of hers makes for an intersting viewing.When the audiences get to know about Natasha`s disappearance,is one such scene which takes the graph of the film upwards.All the scenes,where Drishti gets these visions are very interestingly executed,but then,the film looks very weird and strange at places.The scenes filmed on Mohit,are loud and irritating.The characters of Sunny and Rhea,look very unrealistic and strange.What Sunny does to Rhea,doesn`t seem to be realistic and Rhea,though is shown as a modern woman is still tolerating all the rude and abusive behaviour of Sunny.This makes their relationship look very weird.
Screenplay is half-baked.There are many confusions,throughout in the movie.Except for Drishti`s character,no character is well defined and well explained.Though,this is one such film which depends totally on its chracters.This film is like a body and its characters are like the body parts,but still the biggest flaw is that all the characters,in this movie,are weirdos.They all seem to be lost in a jungle.Another confusing thing about this film is the visions which Drishti gets.Though,her visions are shown in a very stylish manner,but still you don`t understand what is happening,while she is getting visions.
