Films are all about fooling people.Men and women wear make-up, stand in front of strong lights and say memorized lines. This is recorded and exhibited in theatres. If the people like the recorded stuff the movie is a money-spinner.Else, the film maker may have to start living on the streets. Its the biggest lottery in the whole world. No one knows who will be liked by the audience.Naturally such a business is fraught with tons of risk.Only a handful of people become successful actors.
Even fewer are remembered by future generations.Rajesh Khanna was a phenomenon. There was no one like him before him.It is not likely that someone else will replace him.His first movie was 'Aakhri Khat' opposite Indrani Mukherjee. The film sank without a trace in 1968.Then, in 1969 Shakti Samanta released a movie called 'Aradhana'.That was the beginning. For about five years till Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 'Anand' alongside Amitabh Bachchan Khanna was like god.Not that all his movies were successful. But the ladies were crazy about him. When young girls of the 21st century see Khanna in those films they still fall in love with him.He was cute, he was charming, he was tall. And when he did his thing in his trademark style the people went into raptures. He was the first indian actor whom the young men addressed as 'guru'.His kurtas came to be called 'guru' kurtas. All indian girls wanted to marry him.
And when he wed sweet teenager Dimple Kapadia in 1974 there may have been a few suicides.
