Within the first thirty minutes of the film:

a. SRK grabs his crotch at least three times

b. SRK tries to put his hand inside a stranger’s breast

c. SRK names Bruce Lee’s three sisters: Uski Lee, Iski Lee, Sabki Lee

d. SRK cracks some inane “Kondom Kondom” joke

I cannot believe that Indian cinema has been reduced to this now, when the most humorous situation is a sexual innuendo. Anyway, few comments:

a. Why exactly was Shekhar a Tamilian? His language had no bearing to any proceeding, then why make him a Southie? Why couldn’t he just be a dorky Punjabi who speaks Hindi very well, instead of being an annoying Tamilian who cannot pronounce a single word; unless the director’s intention was to mock Tamilans? I hate it when Southies and Punjabis are constantly ridiculed in our films. I am a proud Tamilian, and most definitely do not speak like SRK’s character!

b.What was so special about the special effects? Even Krissh had better effects (forget the Hollywood biggies). All I saw were rays bouncing over walls, and tiny red and blue pieces integrating and disintegrating alternately.

c.Why did Arjun Rampal sign this film? I am stupefied, because although the movie is named after his character, he had absolutely no role whatsoever! He needs to be careful while picking films, lest he remains a prop in his upcoming films too.

d.While I understand the dream sequence at the beginning of the film, it was shot extremely amateurishly. And I don’t even want to begin ranting about the horrible performances of those three stars!

e.Why was the first half so long?

Now, to the performances:

a.   Shah Rukh Khan:He is as melodramatic as ever in the first half, irritating in the second, and fails to make any positive impression! However, he is extremely comfortable with the kid, and their emotional sequences were very well enacted. 5/10

Arjun Rampal: Forget it. 1/10

The kid don’t know his name: A complete natural! His chemistry with his on-screen parents was heartwarming.  8/10

d.Kareena Kapoor: I saved the best for the last! Bebo has made it a habit to shine in bit roles. First Bodyguard, now this! While most other actresses can only look pretty in such one-dimensional roles, this lady imbues her half-baked character with a unique spirit that is so Bebo!!!! The best parts of the film were when she mouthed ‘galis’, and later mourned for her dead husband. She is truly the only complete actress of this generation who makes even the most ridiculous situations seem believable! 7/10

e.The rest of the cast was forgettable.

In sIhort, SRK went wrong with his promotional tactics.

While everyone expected a full-on superhero flick, this dimension comes to the fore only during the pre-climactic and climactic sequences.

Fact is, Ra-1 is not about superheroes; Ra-one is not about special effects; Ra-one is about the emotional interactions between the parents and their kid; Ra-one is about the triumph of good over evil; Ra-one is about love is all its glorious forms

Alas, a poor script, incompetent performances, and insipid special efffects ruin what could have the ultimate blockbuster of Bollwood

Overall Rating: 4/10(1 star for the kid, 1 star for Bebo, 1 star for the emotional sequences, 0.5 star for the music, 0.5 star for SRK’s unfulfilled vision)
