What can one expect from the makers of films like ''Jhankaar Beats'' or ''Chameli''?Some classy and intelligent movies,but their latest offering ''Popcorn Khao Mast Ho Jaao'',will disappoint you alot.Nor is the film entertaining nor is it realistic in terms of treatment.
The impressive music and the fresh star cast promised that the film will be a decent entertainer,but,alas,it is nothing other than a time wasting flick.This film couldn`t even help Tanisha,the kid sister of the former Bollywood queen,Kajol,to get a hit to her credit,after her lacklustre debut movie,''Sssshhh...''.
Infact,the film couldn`t do justice to anyone associated with it.What was wrong with the movie,is the question you must be wanting to ask?The answer is that the whole of the film was wrong.So,what`s left behind?Keep on reading....
THE FILM:
Pritish Nandy Communications.''Popcorn Khao...Mast Ho Jao'',produced by Rangita-Pritish Nandy and directed by Kabir Sadanand stars (introducing) Akshay Kapoor,(introducing)Rashmi Nigam,Tanishaa,Yash Tonk and Deepak Tijori.The film with an unusual title,was expected to be an unusual film,as well,but it has actually turned out to be worse than the 'as usual' kind of Bollywood movies.I wonder why this film was made?
THE CHARACTERS AND PERFORMANCES:
1.Rahul(Akshay Kapoor):Rahul is a very ambitious kind of a boy,who wants to make it big in the music industry.He is a very talented guy who wants to use his talent for gaining fame.Akshay Kapoor,acts very well,considering the fact,that this is his first film,as an actor.He also dances very well,but he should look after his appearance.He should also learn how to cry,in emotional scenes.Keeping the flaws aside,all in all,a confident performer!
2.Tanya(Tanisha):Tanya is a young,bubbly girl who is the best pal of Rahul.She always thinks of Rahul and is always caring towards him.She also loves him alot,a fact of which Rahul is unaware.Tanisha has improved alot,as an actress,since her last movie,''Sssshhh...'' (which was also her first movie).She gives a very natural performance,despite her character being a very half-baked one.What,she only needs is a better movie,which can do justice to her talent.
3.Sonia(Rashmi Nigam):Sonia is one such kind of a girl,that you fall in love with her at first sight.She is stylish,she is charming and she is too hot.Rashmi Nigam,doesn`t get to showcase her acting skills,at all.The only thing she showcases,is her beauty.How easy it is to look pretty and make such face expressions as if you are disgusted.Isn`t it Rashmi?And if you say that making such confused and disgusted faces is acting,then only God can help.
Yash Tonk,as Goldie,performs very well and oozes lots of confidence.This role is an extension to the role he had in ''Ishq Vishk'',and he acts very well.Deepak Tijori,has been seen on the silver screen after such a long time,but in such an insignificant role.He is the worst performer in the whole of the film.
THE STORY:
Rahul is a very ambitious guy,who wants to become a successful musician but lacks that confidence,which one has to have to be in such a profession.Everybody calls him 'kurta' (shirt) in the college (and I don`t know why the call him a 'shirt'?).His best friends list include Tanya and Goldie.
Whenever,there is a problem in his life,whenever he needs someone with whom he can share his feelings,they are always there for him.Goldie loves Tanya,where as Tanya loves Rahul but Rahul is interested in Soniya,no,actually has a crush on Sonia,the hottest babe of the college.
As Rahul wants to become a singer and a musician,he decides to leave for Mumbai,to make his dreams turn into reality,for five years.He also tells his pals,Tanya and Goldie that he won`t be in touch with anyone of them for 5 years.So,off he goes to Mumbai to gain fame.After 5 years,things actually start getting better,when Rahul starts going to a music company office,where Sonia turns out to be the daughter of his boss.She listens to his song,which he has recorded on a CD,and appreciates it.So,Rahul gets his big break through this music company.
THE WORK OF THE CREW:
Kabir Sadanand`s direction is just terrible.The emotional scenes,don`t make you cry,the humorous scenes don`t make you laugh and you start feeling why the hell you are watching the movie?You will have the same confused and disgusted face expression on your face which Rashmi throughout wears on her face,in the film.There is not even a single scene,which you can term as memorable.
Throughout the movie,someone is upto some silly things.Like,when Rahul is having a basketball match he doesn`t paly but runs after his competitor.In the dance party scene,when he wants to dance with Sonia,he starts dancing in a weird manner.Another stupid thing is that he can always see a ''peer-baba'' kind of a thing,who always guides him.How ridiculous!
Screenplay is half-baked.Why does Tanya always cry,when there is nothing to cry about.For instance,when she brings a shirt for Rahul,she starts crying.When she thinks of Rahul,she starts crying.Why?Same goes for Rahul`s character.When is leaving off for Mumbai,he seems to be so serious,as if he will definitely do something great,when he will go to Mumbai,but instead,he starts doing silly things in Mumbai,too.With such a non-serious attitude,no one can become a music director.
Script,is the weakest link of the movie.There is not even one entertaining sequence in the film and it seems that the script wasnt finalized but a rough draft was written on which the director,made the whole film.While watching the film,you will ask yourself that what do the film-makers want to prove and what kind of message do they want to give to the audinces?
Cinematography,is wonderful which makes the film look very fresh and colourful.
Editing,is weak.The film drags alot,unnecessarily.
Vishal-Shehkar`s music is simply the best.Each and every song of the movie is SUPERB!''Le Chale'',performed by Akshay Kapoor,is a lovely song.''Kal Se Koi'' is also a brilliant song.''Dupatta Beimaan Re'',picturised on an item number dancer,Jelena,will make you rock and ''O Solemiya'',picturised on Akshay Kapoor and Rashmi Nigam,has a Spanish touch to it,which makes the song a very different one,from what we usually get to hear and see.
ON THE WHOLE:
''Popcorn Khao...Mast Ho Jaao'' is a complete waste of time.The film defies no logic,has no entertainment value and absolutely no clapworthy scene.The film had the potential of being a ''POPCORN'' entertainer,but sadly,it failed to be one.Its sorry fate at the box-office also seems to be inevitable as the film neither caters to the masses,nor to the classes.Avoid it!
