Andhera paagal hai

Kitna ghanera hai

Chubhta hai, dasta hai,

Phir bhi woh mera hai...

The darkness is insanely dense – it stings me...it hurts me...yet – It is MINE.

And that is the essence of Parineeta.

Parineeta is a story of Lolita,a girl who loved with all her heart and yet chose self-respect over the realization of love.

That dignity, that inner poise of Lolita reaches out and touches somewhere.

The object of her love is Shekhar,a childhood friend, who loves her back but cannot seem to understand her much, which leads to misunderstandings and conflicts. While Lolita is patient, sensitive and considerate, Shekhar is cocky and self centered. Though he is very endearing, he appears totally insensitive to Lolita’s needs.

Enter Girish,a man who loves Lolita, helps her when she needs him most and forms the third angle of this interesting triangle.

Frankly, I was a little apprehensive about watching this movie. Simply because I felt that it may be one of the movies that are overhyped and always end up being high on the gloss and low on substance. However,it was a pleasant surprise. The performances are superb and the direction is commendable.

Performances

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

Vidya Balangets into the skin of her character with an ease and a grace, that is unparalleled in the current lot of Bollywood heroines. She epitomizes Indian womanhood with every graceful movement, with an arch of her eyebrow, with a smile that is sincere and beautiful and with sobs that are heartwrenching.

Saif Ali Khanhas evolved and how ! He looks handsome and rakish. And he delivers a powerhouse performance – whether he is pining for Lolita or raging about her closeness with Girish or just looking at her fondly. Saif Ali Khan has arrived. Finally.

Sanjay Dutt’s performance is smooth and effortless. His screen presence is over-powering. He has this knack of merging toughness with tenderness (like most handsome men do) and he simply shines as Girish.

Direction

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

The direction by Pradeep Sarkar is good - though I did feel that at times, things dragged a wee bit much. Yet, the movie was very gripping and kept me interested throughout.

Music

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

Songs are simply divine, especially, Piyu Bole, Raat Hamaari hai and Kasto mazza hai. Superbly picturized and beautifully rendered – they echo in your thoughts for a long time. Rekha sizzles in ‘Kaise Paheli zindagani’ - it’s amazing how this lady combines oomph with class (Not an easy feat).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------

The most commendable point of this movie is that it combines beautiful cinematography with great performances and direction. Neither departments are compromised for the sake of the other.

And the end result is a piece of art.
