Consumer electronics in city like Mumbai are doing flourishing business. The kind of advertising they do, the gifts and discounts they offer sometimes is mind boggling.

We decided that it was finally time when we bought a DVD player for ourselves. Not because everyone in our neighbourhood bought one before us, but we really wanted to add it to our household peripherals.

We ventured out on Saturday evening and decided to return home with a ''good DVD player'' after 5-6 shops and browsing through several models we could not decide which was a ''good one'' and we returned home. Sunday evening we ventured out again and shortlisted a few brands and models (I would not name all because I do not want to give any comparison analysis).

In terms of weight, sleekness, colour and design, the various disc formats it could play, the price and warranty period we bought ONIDA DFX 7100. We were told by the dealer that we were lucky as the company had recently reduced the prices but keeping the same high-end version.

What I am going to write now is not from the specification book but after trying on my own.

This DVD player can play Audio & Video CDs, CD-Rs, MP3, DVD, Kodak picture Images (downloaded from digicam). However I found that it does not play certain MP3 songs - I don't know why. The famous TV commercial boasted that this DVD player can even play a scratched CD. So I tried one of the scratched CD that I had and bingo it played like any other CD.

Other features The DVD player is Home theater ready. Means you can directly connect it to your amplifier, home theater speakers and TV. I do not have a home theater system but I could easily connect it to my TV and also to my amplifier. So I can enjoy a good film on TV and have a good sound effect through the amp-speakers combination.

The DVD has full function remote control which is easy to use and understand. I was surprised to see that the packed piece came with batteries included for the remote. Picture and sound The picture and sound quality depends on the condition of the CD or DVD. A good branded DVD gives excellent, sharp and clear picture quality. You hardly have to adjust the TV. Regarding audio CDs, the player gives out every note recorded on the disc.

Warranty The company offers 1 year warranty and claims that so far they have not received any serious technical complaints.

My own concern The CD drive in which you place a disc, looks thin and is made of a clear plastic. Hopefully they used an unbreakable plastic like Polycarbonate for the same. If someone handles it roughly then I have a doubt that it may break someday.

The DVD to TV connection cable is short for my 29 inch TV. So I had to make some small correction in my wall unit to place the TV and DVD player close enough.

Conclusion If someone is looking for a good standard DVD player which plays almost all the formats, this one is a good bargain. Some other DVD players offer AM/FM radio included, but the price jump is quite high compared to this one.
