I wanted to buy myself a gold chain and so I went on to olx. I found a guy selling a 1.5 tola (15 grams) gold chain for 30k. The purity or karatage of the chain he said was 24 karats. I spoke to him over the phone then he tells me it's actually 1.3 tolas i.e 13 grams. I decided to buy it any way at a price of 25k.
When I did not call this guy for a day he called me up and said he was in urgent need of money and has decided to sell a 13 gram chain for 15k!!! So I went up to his place and saw the chain and was ready to buy. I decided I go to a local jeweler near by and get it tested. He became a little nervous at the idea. But decided to go any way after lot of coaxing and cajoling. Both of us went over and got it tested.
After a while a guy at the jeweler took me aside and told me that it was A FAKE! He said it had more than the usual amount of gold plating and was the thickest gold plating he had ever seen. The base metal was a superior quality brass that looks exactly like gold. Later I went outside with the seller and quietly told him that I have changed my mind and would not like to buy it.
He became furious and saying things like , "you wasted my time." etc. A big learning experience for me!!
