Delhi is now clearly divided into two areas: New Delhi and Old Delhi. If one wants to get a feel of a modern metropolis, then the newer version of India's capital is great to bein. But, if you are looking for old worldly charms, then please then PLEASE do go to old Delhi.
Where does one begin? And what all does one talk about here. History and culture are the twin care-takers of this area. Be it the Red Fort, Chandni Chowk, Ghalib's haveli in Ballimaran, Dara Shiko's library (now called Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Polytechnic), you name it and you have it. Like all old cities of India, here you get to see cycle rickshaws. Hakims whose families have been practicing right since the time of Shah Jehan can be seen here. I have had the fortune of meeting one such hakeem (Oh God! I have forgotten his name)who treats patiens suffering from cancer, AIDS, and heart problems, all for a fee of Rs. 5. And that is just for first timers who are required to pay this amount for registering themselves. Follow up visits are free.
I would request everyone to go and visit this area. It is no wonder that Ghalib considered Dilli (old Delhi) to be his favourite destination.
